Responsibilities

Position serves as a Nurse (Public Health) in a Medical Treatment Facility; responsible for public health assessment, assurance, and policy development for a health program and assigned beneficiaries in the servicing areas.

 

MAJOR DUTIES

 

1. Serves as a Public Health Nurse, with responsibilities in one or more of the following programs: child, youth, and schools services; communicable disease program management; animal bites/rabies prevention; pediatric lead program health promotion program; mass seasonal influenza vaccine immunization.

a. Child, Youth, and Schools Services (CYSS).

Administers and interprets regulatory and interim guidance on the health and safety requirements for staff and participants, as well as sanitation of facilities and homes. Serves as health consultant to garrison CYSS program, ensuring the health, sanitation, and safety needs of enrolled children are met. Conducts inspections of CYSS centers and family childcare homes to ensure safety and compliance. Administers public health nursing duties and practices, in accordance with established guidelines. Plans, coordinates, conducts, and evaluates classes on medication administration, first aid, communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, pediatric health conditions/ treatments, and health promotion practices. Advises and develops action plans for the Family Advocacy Program special needs accommodation process (SNAP) and case review committee on pediatric health and developmental concerns. Advises on, and reports, communicable disease clusters or outbreaks. Interfaces with civilian health care providers, hospitals, and local community health departments.

b. Communicable Disease Program Management.

Assists in planning, conducting, and evaluating epidemiology and disease surveillance programs. Serves as the communicable disease nurse for disease surveillance and reporting, providing public health care services to beneficiaries of all ages in the Fort Liberty Area. Responsible for executing duties in disease surveillance programs; conducting epidemiological investigations; patient assessments; data tracking and analysis through electronic systems; and counseling, education, and case management for individuals, exposed to and/or infected with sexually transmitted infections (STI), hepatitis, rabies, influenza, and other communicable diseases. Provides education to individuals, family members, and military units in the areas of disease transmission, health promotion, and lifestyle risk reduction behaviors. Prepares and submits appropriate reports regarding patients infected with communicable diseases, as required by law. Monitors for trends in diseases of public health importance and ensures appropriate personnel are informed. Maintains responsibilities for the latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) program, serving as primary point of contact for all MTF positive TB tests, referring and collaborating with other health care personnel and authorities, as appropriate.
