Under the supervision of the Health & Fitness Program Manager, the Personal Trainer is responsible for providing safe, effective, and individualized fitness training in a welcoming and supportive environment. Personal Trainers act in the best interest of each client at all times, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, and care. This role requires ongoing education, sound judgment, and the ability to work within the scope of personal training certification and experience.

Key Responsibilities



Always act in the best interest of the client, providing safe and effective training programs


Conduct fitness assessments prior to designing individualized training programs


Obtain medical clearance when required


Design and deliver personal training sessions aligned with client goals and abilities


Spot clients during free-weight exercises and ensure proper technique and safety


Use physical contact appropriately to correct alignment or enhance client awareness


Monitor client progress and adjust programs as needed


Address client concerns during sessions and stop activity if safety is compromised


Present fitness information clearly and accurately to support informed client decisions


Maintain professional boundaries and focus on the business relationship


Refer clients to appropriate professionals when needs fall outside scope of practice



Facility & Equipment Responsibilities



Maintain a clean, safe, and organized weight and fitness center


Rack weights and return all equipment to proper storage after sessions


Demonstrate and explain proper use of all fitness equipment, including teen center equipment


Reserve personal training office space when needed



Administrative Responsibilities



Maintain accurate and confidential client files onsite at the YMCA


Submit training tickets on time in accordance with payroll schedule


Place courtesy and confirmation calls to clients as needed


Check email regularly and respond promptly


Follow established procedures for medical emergencies, fire, or power outages


Complete detailed incident and accident reports when required



Professional Standards & Expectations



Maintain required certifications, education, and experience


Wear proper uniform and maintain a professional appearance


Respect client and coworker privacy at all times


Bartering of services is not permitted


Requests for personal training assignments are coordinated through the Health & Fitness Program Manager


Inform clients of preferred contact method (phone or email)


Perform additional duties as assigned to support overall department operations


QualificationsQualifications



Current nationally recognized Personal Training certification (required)


CPR/AED and First Aid certification (required)


Strong communication and interpersonal skills


Commitment to YMCA values and member-centered service
