Position Summary
The Secondary English Language Arts (ELA) Coach is responsible for assisting the Director of English Language Arts in planning, supporting, and training Building Coaches, Demonstration Teachers, classroom teachers, and instructional contacts in the implementation of effective, standards-based ELA instruction. The coach will support the integration of research-based literacy practices that promote critical thinking, reading, writing, and communication skills aligned with the Next Generation ELA Learning Standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports schools in implementing high-quality ELA instruction using research-based strategies aligned with the SCSD instructional framework and disciplinary literacy practices
- Assists administrators in coaching and training teachers in evidence-based reading and writing instruction, with a focus on text complexity, close reading, and writing across genres
- Designs and delivers professional development for administrators and teachers on instructional best practices, the Science of Reading, formative assessment, and effective feedback to improve student outcomes in ELA.
- Identifies and curates instructional resources to support differentiation and meet the diverse needs of all learners in ELA instruction.
- Provides targeted support to schools experiencing challenges in areas such as reading comprehension, writing instruction, and literacy intervention
- Collaborates with all content areas and departments including family engagement to support interdisciplinary literacy, humanities instruction, and community engagement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of English Language Arts
Experience and Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or English Language Arts 7-12 required
- Master’s degree or higher preferred
- Minimum of five years of successful classroom teaching experience in ELA required
- Three years of instructional coaching or supervisory experience preferred
- Prior experience with standards-based instruction, curriculum development, and professional development delivery required
- Experience working in a large, urban school district preferred
- Strong knowledge of adolescent literacy, writing instruction, and culturally responsive teaching practices
Certification/Licensure:
- Must hold or be eligible for a valid and clear teaching certificate.
Minimum Qualifications
- Deep understanding of the NYS Next Generation ELA Learning Standards and instructional shifts
- Experience with curriculum design and implementation
- Demonstrated ability to lead professional learning for adult learners across content areas
- Knowledge of differentiation strategies to support diverse learners, including English Language Learners and students with disabilities
- Ability to plan and implement short- and long-term instructional goals
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively in team settings
- Proficiency with instructional technology tools, including Microsoft Office Suite and digital learning platforms
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills

Salary/Salary Range
Compensation is in accordance with the Unit 1 contractual agreement and ranges from $57,766 to $99,065, based on experience and qualifications. Teachers may also have the opportunity to participate in our Summer School Programs, which are compensated at an hourly rate of $45.00.
