Careers that Change Lives
At Medtronic, we push the limits of what technology can do to make tomorrow better than yesterday and that makes it an exciting and rewarding place to work. We value what makes you unique. Be a part of a company that thinks differently to solve problems, make progress, and deliver meaningful innovations.
This is an exciting opportunity to join Medtronic's Structural Heart and Aortic operating unit. SH&A offers minimally invasive approaches to restore proper structure and function of the heart and the aorta. We focus on the transcatheter replacement or repair of the four heart valves—aortic, pulmonic, mitral, tricuspid—and the placement of stent grafts to treat aneurysms and dissections of the body’s largest artery, the aorta.
Within SH&A, the Modeling & Simulation and Reliability group develops and executes multi-disciplinary models to assess design risk and ensure device and system reliability and safety. We build fundamental understanding and provide insights for design decisions by building robust performance predictions. This is a very exciting time for this organization as we focus on expanding our product portfolio to treat more patients. In this role, the Principal Engineer will be working on the prosthetic valve and delivery system teams to develop, qualify, and commercialize the device.
Key Technologies:
Evolut™ PRO and PRO+ TAVR systems
Melody™ Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve
Harmony™ Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve
Intrepid™ Transcatheter Valve System
Endurant™ II/IIs AAA Stent Graft System
Valiant Captivia™ Thoracic Stent Graft System
Heli-FX endoanchor system
We believe that when people from different cultures, genders, and points of view come together, innovation is the result —and everyone wins. Medtronic walks the walk, creating an inclusive culture where you can thrive.
This position is in Mounds View, MN within the Structural Heart and Aortic (SHA) operating unit and requires on-site presence a minimum of three days a week. This position is not open to remote candidates.
At Medtronic you can begin a life-long career of exploration and innovation, while helping champion healthcare access and equity for all. You’ll lead with purpose, breaking down barriers to innovation in a more connected, compassionate world.

In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Principal R/D Engineer. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
- Collaborate with, or lead, cross functional teams to execute the modeling and simulation strategy for design optimization and evaluating reliability of Structural Heart and Aortic devices
- Be a leader in developing predictive engineering tools, techniques, and approaches to support the product development process
- Plan and execute modeling & simulation studies to assess stress/strain magnitudes and distributions in implant and delivery system components
- Virtual design and prototyping of new transcatheter heart valves, using expertise in non-linear finite element software tools to incorporate large deformation, complex multibody contact, dynamic impact, modal analysis and multiaxial cyclic fatigue failure modes
- Interpretation of complex in-vivo loading modes derived from patient imaging and mathematical conversion to Finite Element Analysis boundary conditions. Research into realistic device-anatomy interaction simulations including reconstruction of patient anatomies into meshed FEA models
- Application of CFD or FSI software tools to predict flow conditions in the vicinity of implanted bioprosthetic heart valves
- Develop deep understanding of procedure through cadaver and animal studies to refine device usage and procedural aspects in partnership with physicians; provide support to clinical trials as needed
- Manage product interfaces across implant, catheter, accessories and packaging, including setting up requirements flow and ensuring design changes are properly evaluated
- Communicate with internal and external customers and vendors at various levels; represent work through internal conferences and collaborations across multiple business units and functions.
The Successful candidate will have:
- Strong technical aptitude with a deep understanding of the finite element method, and its application using commercially available software packages, and a strong understanding of fundamental engineering principles in mechanics and/or CFD and FSI.
- Experience in the application of the principles of fatigue analysis for metals including super
