Position Summary:
BON in a Box is a pioneering platform developed and led by GEO BON, an independent network of researchers dedicated to advancing biodiversity monitoring globally. It offers collaborative tools for biodiversity monitoring. Notably, as a community-driven open-source platform, BON in a Box enables sharing indicator and EBV workflows to monitor the global biodiversity crisis. Our mission is to make biodiversity data and insights readily available to all users, facilitating informed decision-making and conservation efforts worldwide.
Primary responsibilities:
- Collaborate with scientists and stakeholders to develop and document workflows for calculating Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) and indicators.
- Assess that the results are conform to the expected result of the indicator, create proof of concepts and documentation examples.
- Provide expertise in R coding to facilitate data analysis and workflow development.
- Coordinate the workflow peer-review process that makes sure the code/models are reliable and generalizable, and the documentation up to standards.
- Engage (and consult) with partners and contributors to understand their needs.
- Effectively communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences, such as what a workflow or model is achieving and the role of each parameter.
- Present the BON in a Box project in various online and in-person events.
Qualifications:
- Proficiency in R coding and experience with biodiversity data analysis.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly and effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with scientists and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- Adaptability and a quick learning ability to navigate different realms of biology.
- Maturity, professionalism, and a commitment to advancing biodiversity conservation efforts.
Experience and education:
- Master degree in biology or equivalent
- 3 years experience in R coding, Julia and Python an asset.
- Fluent in English (reading and writing), French an asset.
Expected duration: 1 year with the possibility of extension
Location: This position is located in Montreal, Quebec and the work for this position is expected to be performed in Quebec.
