Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Experimental Particle Physics 2022

Description

The Department of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position in experimental particle physics. The position involves work on the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and on the proposed Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) at SLAC. The current CMS group at CMU consists of Professors John Alison, Valentina Dutta, and Manfred Paulini. Prof. Dutta also works on LDMX.

Qualifications

We expect the successful candidate to contribute to searches for physics beyond the standard model at CMS, as well as to the CMS Phase-2 upgrades for the High-Luminosity LHC. CMU is a module assembly center for the CMS high-granularity endcap calorimeter upgrade. The group is also involved in the operation of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter and active in CMS data analyses using the Higgs boson and models of supersymmetry to search for physics beyond the standard model. The successful applicant would also have the opportunity of contributing to LDMX, with increasing involvement over time. The group works with faculty in CMU's departments of Machine Learning and Statistics. Applications from candidates with interests in exploring machine learning in particle physics are welcome.

A Ph.D. in experimental high energy physics at the time of appointment is required. The position is based at CMU for at least the first two years. The appointment is initially for one year and renewable annually, subject to mutual satisfaction.
