About the role

The University of Maine Augusta is seeking applicants for the part-time position of Library Specialist CL1 at Nottage Library on the Bangor campusThe Library Specialist supports the overall mission of the library by performing a variety of paraprofessional library duties including customer service duties, and interlibrary loan and reserves processing. The Library Specialist will also support student needs at the circulation desk, including circulating materials and offering preliminary research guidance. Duties include, but are not limited to

  • Marketing and promotion of the library on the Bangor campus
  • Attend events on campus where library services can be promoted
  • Oversee library displays and bulletin boards
  • Assist library users at the main service desk, including basic circulation functions such as check-in/out, creating and maintaining patron records
  • Support student needs by responding to or referring questions
  • Troubleshoot printer, desktop, and software problems
  • Assist the library student coordinator with determining student employee needs 
  • Assist in training student employees in basic library operations 
  • Assign tasks as needed 
  • Assist students with reference questions as able, referring more complex questions to librarians 
  • Oversee the appearance of the circulation desk and library spaces

Work schedule: The CL1 will work twenty hours per week. The anticipated schedule is Monday - Thursday, 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The normal shift for this position is during evening hours on weekdays. Occasional daytime and/or weekend hours may be required. This is an academic-year appointment (September through May).

Working Conditions: Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 

Wage: $18.13 per hour (Wage Band 21) or the appropriate transfer rate for a current UMS employee.

  • Ability to work with diverse student populations 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant coursework, training, or experience in library services including circulation practices, library promotion, or student-employee training
  • Experience with MaineStreet Marketplace (PeopleSoft)
  • Familiarity with statewide library services, including URSUS, MaineCat, Digital Maine Library, or automated integrated library systems.
