We are seeking candidates for the position of Rail Vehicle Mechanical Maintenance General Intern / Trainee - Regional Rail (0836) in the REE&M/RRD Shops & Yards.    

  

 

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

Note: These positions will begin in July 2025

 

SEPTA is recruiting candidates for our Mechanical General Intern Training Program. This one-year program is a structured formalized method of training consisting of "on-the -job training" performed under the supervision of a subject matter expert coupled with related classroom instruction.

 

The purpose of the program is to develop candidates into experienced 2nd Class Rail Vehicle Mechanics who will be members of one of the four Mechanical unions at SEPTA.

 

Rail Mechanics are responsible for the inspection, adjustment, repair/replacement and overhaul of rail vehicles and related accessories.

 

The candidates who qualify to participate in the program will be considered a General Intern.

 

Compensation Data

The candidates who qualify to participate in the program will be considered an Intern. The Intern starting pay rate is $17.56/hour.

Interns who finish the program and are hired as 2nd Class Rail Vehicle Mechanics will earn $31.22/hr. to start.

Once hired, Employees can test and promote into 1st Class ($37.17/hr.) and Specialist (38.72/hr.) Rail Vehicle Mechanic positions (as well as various other positions throughout SEPTA).

 

** Please Note - Intern / Trainee positions are Full-Time, Benefits eligible Union positions.**

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Rail Mechanics are responsible for the inspection, adjustment, repair/replacement and overhaul of rail vehicles and related accessories.

 

Additional responsibilities: Complies with all Authority and Departmental safety and security policies and procedures, as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities.

 

Reports any safety concerns, compromises, or hazards in the immediate working environment to Supervision and takes initiative to alleviate potential and existing hazards affecting self and other employees.

 

Is responsible for the individual’s own safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others. 

 

This Training program requires extensive study and demonstration of material taught as reflected by Written Knowledge and Performance Tests. Participant will be evaluated and tested throughout the length of the Internship to advance to the different levels of the program.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Successful applicants must possess a High School diploma or GED (or be On Track to graduate by June 2025)  and have successfully completed a training program in a Mechanical / Electro-Mechanical field from a Vo Tech High School, post high school technical school or from the military within the past 4 years.  *Upcoming 2025 graduates from these programs are encouraged to apply.

 

  • A valid driver's license is also required.

 

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age by training start date in July 2025

 

  • Please note that participants must pass all required written and performance tests or they will be dismissed from the program.
