About the role

JOB SUMMARY

Math Learning Lab Peer Tutors provide academic support and assistance to fellow students for classes offered by the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science. This role involves facilitating learning, reinforcing course material, and helping students develop effective study skills. Peer tutors serve as mentors and guides, fostering a collaborative learning environment that encourages student success.

Currently recruiting tutors for:

•         Math 1014 – College Algebra

•         Math 1102 – Mathematical Perspectives

•         Math 1151/1161 – Math for Educators I and II

•         Math 1203 – Statistical Models for Social Science

•         Math 1205 – Finite Math with Applied Calculus for Business

•         Math 1015 – Precalculus

•         Math 1401 – Calculus 1

•         Math 1501/1511/2511 – Calculus 1, 2, or 3 for Math and Physical Science

•         Math 2111 – Statistics for Science

•         CSAS 1114/1115 – Intro to Program Design 1 and 2

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

•         Conduct one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions with students seeking assistance in Mathematics or Computer Science.

•         Clarify course concepts, review homework assignments, and help students prepare for exams.

•         Adapt tutoring techniques to accommodate diverse learning styles and individual student needs.

•         Provide clear explanations and examples to aid student's understanding of complex topics.

•         Offer guidance on note-taking, math study skills, and exam preparation methods.

•         Direct students to additional resources, such as online tutorials or academic support services, to supplement their learning.

•         Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, including student attendance, topics covered, and progress made.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Currently enrolled undergraduate student.

Proficiency in Mathematics and/or Computer Science, with an A or B+ in the courses.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Patience, empathy, and the ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.

Reliability and punctuality in fulfilling tutoring commitments.

Computer Science tutors must have a letter of recommendation from either Dr. Morazan, Dr. Albagli-Kim, Dr. Anand, or Dr. Hemann.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Proficiency in Excel, StatsCrunch, Mathematica, Racket

Previous tutoring experience preferred.
