The Pharmacy Manager is a Senior Clinical Staff Person (SCSP) designated by the organization to oversee the services provided at the pharmacy; therefore, the pharmacy manager:
• Is currently licensed to practice a health profession in the relevant jurisdiction(s)
• Has documented qualifications to perform clinical oversight for the services provided as set forth by the organization to meet its needs,
• Is responsible for oversight of clinical decision-making aspects of the program,
• Ensures that qualified clinicians are accountable to the organization for decisions affecting consumers, AND
• Provides guidance for clinical operational aspects of the program
Job Responsibilities:
• Maintains daily operation of pharmacy department by supervising pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the routine performance of their duties.
• Ensures the pharmacy is adequately staffed during all hours of operation.
• Schedules pharmacy staff for routine, weekend, holiday, and on-call hours.
• Provides appropriate technical and customer service training for pharmacy staff.
• Monitors and validates prescriptions with accuracy and efficiency, including the meds to beds and specialty program
• Provides pharmaceutical counseling, MTM services, consultation and administration of vaccines
• Maintains inventory and records of controlled drugs and other drugs as required by law.
• Monitors inventory for outdates and ensures that storage requirements are met
• Maintains a working knowledge of the general, chemical, and physical properties of drugs handled in the pharmacy.
• Completes and maintains all logs, reports, and daily operational checklists
• Keeps up to date on all policies and procedures, including URAC and ACHC accreditation requirements
• Keeps up to date with 340B requirements, including the patient assistance procedure and validating eligible claims
• Ensure staff is informed of product upgrades or enhancements in a timely manner.
• Hire and train competent staff.
• Verify departmental timesheets for departmental employees ensuring the timesheets are accurate based on the work-schedule and necessary corrections are done prior to timely Payroll submission.
• Conduct initial and annual performance evaluations.
• Promote teamwork; discipline staff when warranted.
• Completes all annual competency assessments and training
• Follows the standard of conduct, pharmacist’s oath, and laws set forth by the Board of Pharmacy, DEA, Medicare, Medicaid, and federal government and reports violations and misconduct to the appropriate chain of command.
• Utilize appropriate measures to promote and maintain patient and staff safety.
• Contact and confer with physicians regarding clarifying questions on prescriptions
• Compounds prescriptions as approved by law and within policy and procedure
• Monitor drug therapy for contraindications, interactions, allergies, and appropriateness.
• Maintain patient’s medication records
• Participate in educations programs, staff meetings, in-service education, committees, and other programs as required by the facility and/or pharmacy.
• Perform other duties as required.
Accreditation Responsibilities:
• Oversees development and implementation of the Performance Improvement/Quality Management Plan.
• Oversees development and implementation of the Patient Management Program
• Coordinates, participates in, and reports activities and outcomes to the PI/QMC.
• Oversees the organization and administration of pharmacy orientation programs, training programs for Pharmacy Technicians, pharmacy staff meetings, in-service educational programs and other committees such as PI/QMC and functions as required by the facility and pharmacy department.
• Oversees the validation of shipping processes via internal validation studies, and the use of appropriate materials for the packaging of medications according to policy and procedures to ensure appropriate conditions and temperature ranges are maintained during the shipping process.
• Ensures effective patient advocacy and the delivery of proactive communication with patients and/or caregivers, and documentation of communication with the client/patient, including Welcome Packet content.
EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited college of pharmacy. Pharm.D. is preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum 3 years of experience in a retail pharmacy setting, among which 1 year with managerial duties.
PHYSICAL: Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
Schedule: Work schedule will vary based on the needs of the business. Traditional work days will be Monday – Friday. May be required to work weekends, holidays, and nights. Must be able to travel as needed.
