About the role

Description

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Chicago invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Modern Iberian Studies, with an expected start date of July 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter. We seek a scholar whose work specializes in Modern Iberian Studies with a focus on literary and cultural studies. Ideal candidates will be able to combine a theoretically informed approach to their research with a solid mastery of nineteenth to twenty-first century Iberian cultural traditions. Beyond this fundamental basis, we welcome scholars with interests in fields including but not limited to literary and intellectual history; multilingualism; cinema and visual culture; race, diaspora, and migration; ecocriticism; gender and sexuality; Global Hispanophone, Global Lusophone, and post-colonial studies. 

The selected candidate will pursue their own research agenda, collaborate with faculty in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and other areas of the Division of the Arts & Humanities and University, and teach in both the graduate and undergraduate curriculum, including in the University’s College Core curriculum. The teaching load for tenure-track positions is typically four courses per year on the quarter system. Additional responsibilities include advising at all levels of the program, and service on departmental and university committees.

 

Salary Range or Pay Grade:

Assistant Professor: $90,000-$120,000; this base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment paid over twelve months. The position also includes a relocation allowance for qualifying expenses.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have an active research agenda resulting in publication in leading venues in their field or the potential to develop such a publication record, as well as the ability or potential to be an excellent teacher and mentor at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Native or near-native competence in Spanish and in English is required. Portuguese and other Iberian languages highly desired.

All requirements for receipt of a PhD in a relevant field must be completed prior to the start of the appointment.
