MAHEC Lead Medical Coder

Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is committed to improving health in Western North Carolina through innovative health professions training and education and compassionate healthcare. We are seeking to fill a full-time, benefitted Lead- Certified Medical Coder. This role is responsible for reviewing and ensuring accurate coding for Family Medicine, Behavior Health, and Internal Medicine Clinics at MAHEC. This coder will work in Asheville, NC. Remote work considered for experienced coders only.

RESPONSIBILITIES include:

Lead Position Responsibilities

  • Point of contact for the coding team.
  • Process Productivity reports daily.
  • Support the coding team on daily coding work.
  • Serves as a resource and subject matter expert to other coding staff.
  • Attend meetings where the coding team presence is needed.
  • Work directly with coding manager on personnel issue.
  • Perform coding month end processes.

Coder Position responsibilities

  • Review and verify patient demographic/insurance information, update as necessary.
  • Extract relevant information from patient records.
  • Liaising with physicians and other parties to clarify information.
  • Examine documents for missing information.
  • Assign CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and ASA codes.
  • Submit CPT corrections/changes to Coding Supervisor for approval, as necessary.
  • Post all clinic charges to patient accounts accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with the billing team with patient coding issues.
  • Collaborate with the billing team on carrier denials.
  • Process claims within Veradigm, RCx, Cerner and IM Bills applications.
  • Keep up to date with coding changes and collaborate with the Audit/Education team.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED required
• One (2) year of relevant coding and/or billing experience preferred


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
• National certification from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC).

COMPUTER SKILLS:
• Allscripts and Cerner software experience preferred
