About the role

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for a full-time Assistant IT Manager. Under the supervision of the IT Administrator III (IT Manager), the IT Administrator II (Assistant IT Manager) installs, maintains, and upgrades, workstations, servers, as well as operating systems and software. The incumbent will provide direct technical support for EECS faculty, staff and students. The position focuses on Microsoft Windows technology systems and provides backup to the department's Linux IT administrators. Information Technology (IT) System Administration:

• Administers desktop and server systems to support departmental operations, research, and teaching activities.

• Designs and maintains system monitoring and configuration procedures.

• Develops and tests installation procedures and configuration settings for Windows desktop and server systems.

• Ensures compliance of Windows and MacOS desktop and server systems with University security requirements, policies, guidelines, and industry best practices.

• Performs hardware and software maintenance on Windows desktop and server systems within the department.

• Monitors systems for health, availability, and security status.

• Analyzes and designs complex software environments for Windows operating systems, including virtual desktop infrastructure.

 

Direct End-User Support:

• Provides expert advice to faculty, students, and staff on IT-related inquiries and issues.

• Supports faculty and students in navigating complex engineering software environments.

• Addresses requests and needs from EECS faculty, staff, and students regarding departmental computing resources.

• Monitors and reviews support tickets managed by student staff, ensuring accuracy and assisting with solutions.

• Investigates and recovers data from systems designated for surplus.

 

Planning, Instruction, and Documentation:

• Conducts research and monitors emerging security threats, implementing mitigation or resolution procedures.

• Develops and maintains comprehensive security solutions for EECS Windows systems, ensuring compliance with University standards.

• Plans and executes hardware and software updates to support operational, research, and teaching objectives.

• Delegates tasks and projects to student staff based on departmental priorities and individual strengths and interests.

• Updates and maintains internal documentation and instructions, ensuring alignment with EECS policies and procedures.

 

Managing the EECS IT Help Desk:

• Recruits, interviews, and hires new student help desk staff as needed to maintain a high level of service.

• Oversees student help desk operations, including training, performance monitoring, and resource allocation.

• Coordinates and manages the scheduling of student help desk staff, ensuring optimal coverage and efficient operation.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field

• Five years Windows Server (recent versions) system administration experience

• Knowledge of PC-based computer hardware and software

• Knowledge of computer operating systems concepts such as kernels, compilers, and shared libraries

• Knowledge of computer security principles and best practices

• Knowledge of computer science concepts such as data structures and algorithms

• Knowledge of virtualization technologies such as Microsoft Hyper-V and Azure Virtualization

• Skills in Windows system administration procedures and practices, including configuring and securing workstations and server systems

• Skills in scripting in a language such as PowerShell, Bash, Perl, or Python

• Skills in configuration management using Microsoft Active Directory Group Policy and Microsoft Intune

• Written and Oral Communications Skills

• Ability to train others in IT-rel
