About the role

Description

The Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook University is recruiting a Director for the Center for Healthy Aging.  This role will serve as Scientific and Administrative Director of the Center for Healthy Aging Research, engage in strategic planning for Healthy Aging, conduct collaborative research in area(s) relevant to the mission of the Center for Healthy Aging, mentor trainees and junior faculty interested in aging research, and contribute to the clinical and teaching mission of Stony Brook School of Medicine.

The selected candidate will have a faculty appointment in a RSOM department based on their area of expertise.

Responsibilities:

1.  Serve as Scientific and Administrative Director of the Center for Healthy Aging Research

  • Oversee CHA budget, CHA funding priorities and CHA grants management.
  • Interface with LINCATS (Long Island Network for Clinical and Translational Sciences) to help researchers in aging receive the support they need to obtain competitive NIH/NIA funding.
  • Conduct periodic meetings of the Internal, External and Community CHA Advisory Boards.
  • Plan annual CHA Research symposium, bimonthly research seminars to promote transdisciplinary research.
  • Cultivate collaborative relationships throughout Stony Brook University and through the Stony Brook Medicine health care system, including the Northport DVAMC and Long Island State Veterans Home.  Areas of research may be in basic science, neuroscience, clinical, translational, health services, epidemiologic/population health or other research relevant to healthy aging.
  • Supervise administrative staff in overseeing the Center for Healthy Aging (CHA).
  • Enhance partnerships in aging research through community outreach to a diverse population of older adults, including those with social determinants of health.

2.  Engage in strategic planning for Center for Health Aging to:

  • Increase federal, state and foundation funding for geriatric research at Stony Brook with long term goals of attaining NIA designation as a Center for Excellence in Alzheimer’s Research, a Claude D. Pepper Center Grant and/or a Roybal Center for Translational Research on Aging.
  • Develop novel areas of inquiry in healthy aging research.
  • Promote inter-institutional health services, translational and basic research through collaboration with other national aging research centers.
  • Position the institution for a competitive GWEP application in the future.

3.  Conduct collaborative research in area(s) relevant to the mission of the Center for Healthy Aging

  • Obtain/maintain NIH/NIA/AHRQ/PCORI funding for own research.
  • Disseminate findings through presentations at national meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journals.

4.  Mentor trainees and junior faculty interested in aging research

  • Link learners with well-established aging researchers.
  • Conduct informational webinars on how to navigate the grant application process at Stony Brook.

5.  Contribute to the clinical and teaching mission of Stony Brook School of Medicine

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
M.D. or equivalent medical degree (or foreign equivalent) OR Ph.D. /other relevant doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) with aging research experience. Ability to attain NYS License if MD or other clinical provider.

Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent leadership skills. Experience in collaborative gerontologic, geriatric or health services research as documented by publications in peer-reviewed journals. Experience in collaborative transdisciplinary research with a strong track record of independent extramural funding.
