CLASS DEFINITION

A Public Works Inspector II ensures that contractors comply with specifications, standards and codes for public construction projects by performing on-site inspections on highway, street, bridge, water and waste water systems facilities or other complex construction projects. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek; some evening and weekend hours may be required. Work is performed outdoors where incumbents are exposed to construction sites, inclement weather, dust, noise and traffic. Work requires minimal physical exertion; however, there may be periods of prolonged standing or walking.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:


EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
AND 
EXPERIENCE:
 Have four years of experience in performing construction inspection work in one of the following areas: highways, streets, bridges or water and sewer system facilities.
OR
NOTE EQUIVALENCIES – Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.


LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES
Have a valid Maryland Class C Non-Commercial driver’s license or an equivalent driver’s license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of construction methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of concrete mixing and pouring.
  • Knowledge of City construction codes and specifications.
  • Ability to inspect construction projects to ensure compliance with construction specifications, standards and codes.
  • Ability to complete routine forms and reports and maintain a daily inspection log.
  • Ability to perform routine field tests on construction materials.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to train new employees.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

BACKGROUND CHECK

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed. 

PROBATION

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month/1-year probation. (update for BPD positions)

ELIGIBILITY

Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
