BRIEF AGENCY DESCRIPTION: Deputy Director of Fisheries and Hatcheries Division is part of the senior management team for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The Division is responsible for the preservation, protection, enhancement and wise use of the State’s freshwater fishery resources. The Division is comprised of 7 Regional Offices and 8 Hatchery Facilities around the state, a statewide support team and an aquatic invasive species program based in the headquarters.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: The duties and responsibilities of the position are to assist developing, implementing, directing, and administering all components of the Department’s inland fishery management program including: the development and implementation of policy, standard operating procedures, guidelines, comprehensive strategic and operational management planning, research, regional and statewide resource assessment and management programs, fish culture facility operations and stocking programs, regulatory programs, permitting and licensing programs, Division budgeting, and a variety of associated information and education initiatives pertaining to the role of the Division and the conservation of the State’s fishery resources. This position represents the Fisheries and Hatcheries Division and the department at local, state, and national levels.

This position provides supervision of the Division's Statewide Fisheries Support Team, Aquatic Invasive fish and wildlife team, native fish conservation team, as well as administrative support staff of the Division. Work is performed under administrative direction from the Director of Fisheries and Hatcheries.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: An eight (8) year combination of post-secondary education and experience that demonstrates an ability to direct, plan, and coordinate the Departments Fisheries and Hatcheries Division.

Preference given to those with professional work experience in the following areas: Public administration, budgetary development, freshwater fisheries management, and environmental review as it relates to state and federal natural resources, regulations, and policies.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Preferred:

• Knowledge of applicable State and Federal Laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to inland fish conservation and environmental programs.
• Knowledge of principles of environmental review procedures.
• Knowledge of biology, ecology, life history, and habitat requirements of Maine's inland fisheries.
• Knowledge of State budgeting, funding, resource allocation, and financial procedures.
• Knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, precedents, government budgeting, legislative/rule making processes, Department policies and executive orders.
• Knowledge of long-range planning and management principles involved in strategic planning and resource allocation.
• Knowledge of organizational staffing, planning, and teambuilding.
• Ability to develop partnerships and engage and incorporate stakeholder opinions, concerns, and decisions into the planning process.
• Ability to oversee, direct and evaluate assigned programs, personnel, and Division tasks. 
• Ability to identify and resolve complex natural resource issues.
• Ability to serve as the agency's resource by advising, conferring, and consulting with a variety of external partners and stakeholders.
• Ability to interact with state resource management agencies throughout the United States.
• Ability to promote programs and policies of the Department.
• Ability to communicate complex issues to a wide range of user groups
