The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Helsinki, invites applications for the position of university lecturer in environmental and resource economics for a permanent appointment starting 1.9.2025 or as agreed. The permanent position will be located at the Department of Economics and Management.
The appointee holds a PhD degree in economics or environmental and resource economics and is able to give courses in environmental economics and/or natural resource economics. The appointee has the ability to analyse interaction of society and environment, environmental issues and problems, and nature conservation by applying economic theory and methods
The duties of the university lecturer will include providing teaching in accordance with the degree requirements (BSc, MSc and PhD levels), supervising and examining theses and dissertations, and conducting research in the field of environmental and resource economics.
The university lecturer will be attached to the Liberal Arts and Sciences bachelor’s programme (LAS) currently under preparation at the university. This programme, led by the Faculty of Arts, will join the faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Science, Agriculture and Forestry, and Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki for its first broadly interdisciplinary international bachelor’s programme.
The appointee will have the unique opportunity to take part in designing and delivering a programme first of its kind in the University of Helsinki and in Finland. The pedagogical idea behind the programme is that through being exposed to, and needing to integrate diverse disciplinary outlooks, students will learn (alongside disciplinary skills) broadly useful meta-skills of interdisciplinary contextualisation, analysis, problem-solving and critical thinking.
Overall, the programme will be coordinated by university lecturers to be hired into each of the five faculties. At Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry the university lecturer will collaborate with the Department of Forest Science. The candidate will manage and plan the studies of all Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry LAS students.
The appointee will also have a significant role in designing core courses for the programme, in which they will act as responsible teachers. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme will also require plenty of student mentoring, in which the appointee will also take part.
The responsibilities of the university lecturer also include participating in student marketing for the bachelor's programme, as well as engaging in societal interaction.
Requirements for the position and assessment of qualifications
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, appointees to university lectureships must hold an applicable doctoral degree and have the ability to provide high-quality research-based teaching and supervise theses.
When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and a teaching demonstration.
Additional evaluation criteria for this position are:
- Strong skills in quantitative methods (e.g. bioeconomic modelling, optimisation and cost-benefit analysis)
- Experience in designing and enacting teaching (on any level, e.g. course/module/programme)
- Experience in co-ordinating and organising teaching and/or research
- Experience in mentoring and guiding students
