CLASS DEFINITION

A Welder applies heat to metal pieces to melt, fuse and then form a permanent bond. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in a repair shop where there is exposure to welding torches, gases, fumes and dust. Work requires strenuous physical exertion including lifting, bending, stooping and working in awkward positions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

Education: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate

AND

Experience: Have three years of experience in welding work.

OR

Equivalency Notes: Have six months of additional experience in welding work may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement. Completion of one year of the required coursework in a welding curriculum in an accredited high school or vocational school may be substituted for six months of the experience requirement.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: Have a valid Maryland class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management may be required.

PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE AND LEARNER'S PERMITS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the tools, materials and techniques used in welding work.

  • Knowledge of parts replacement and alignment procedures.

  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.

  • Ability to read and understand work orders, specifications and blueprints.

  • Ability to safely use gas and electric arc welding equipment.

  • Ability to inspect weld for bead size and other specifications.

BACKGROUND CHECK

                                   

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed. 

PROBATION

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month.

ELIGIBILITY

Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.                                                             

EDUCATION ACCREDITATION

Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
