A high-performance, experienced individual is sought for a Flight Operations Directorate (FOD) Spaceflight Meteorologist (FSM) position. The candidate will achieve an FSM certification and serve as a member of the Flight Integration Division of FOD. The candidate will be responsible for providing weather advice and expertise to NASA JSC emergency and senior management during severe and hazardous weather situations as it relates to personnel safety and mission success, providing testing and evaluation of weather-related software/displays, and developing and delivering training materials/plans in support of personnel FSM position certification.

This is a part-time position, 20 hours per week.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Using meteorological forecast models and real-time weather observation through instrumentation and doppler radar, provide weather forecasts and real-time weather interpretation to the Mission Control Center on-console Flight Director
• Provide meteorological expertise in the pre-flight development and real-time interpretation of flight rules associated with weather phenomena, such as maximum wind limits, allowable precipitation, wave height, lightning, and other weather features
• Provide historical analysis of measured weather over time for climatological studies to inform programmatic risk decisions
• Provide pre-event weather briefings and flight rule interpretation for FOD and program personnel, including launch, landing, and other events, as well as provide expertise through participation in weather briefings led by other NASA organizations as required
• Provide to NASA for evaluation, inputs to changes to real-time weather software changes based on insights, lessons learned, and best practices from interactions with National Weather Service and NASA meteorological data systems
• Provide testing and evaluation inputs to NASA for real-time software/displays developed for operational weather data
• Develop training plans/materials for weather fundamentals, models, model interpretation, weather flight rules, and weather decision-making
• Develop a training plan for implementation in the FOD Training Management tool for personnel to complete weather training to serve as an FSM
• Provide training to incoming FOD FSM personnel on operational weather decision-making, console support, briefings, and interactions with spaceflight operations personnel
• Provide training to Flight Director Office and Program leadership on weather fundamentals, models, model interpretation, weather flight rules, and weather decision-making

Some travel for this position is possible.

Experience Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or Hydrology (Physical Science or Engineering) or a related field
• At least twenty years of meteorology-related experience
• This position requires the successful completion of a government background check before the commencement of employment.
