We have an exciting Senior Analytics Engineer role available in our Analytics Center of Excellence – the power hub of analytics for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM)!

About the Role

Responsible for the build and maintenance of data environments by sourcing, integrating and programming data that can be utilized to solve complex business cases for advanced analytics for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) and its subsidiaries. Responsible for owning the overall technical design and direction of the developed product. Responsible for understanding the business problem, scoping the analytics work, and finally developing the best possible solution. Directly perform or oversee the development of workflows, pipelines, user interface and analytical data sets.

Please Note: Hybrid work structure, which requires working a minimum of 1 day per week at our downtown Detroit office (we provide free parking).

Aspects/functions of this Senior Analytics Engineer opportunity may include:

  • Design, develop, document and test advanced data systems that supports the manipulation of structured and unstructured data sets from disparate sources.
  • Create workflows, pipelines, and program libraries to extract, move and transform data for manipulation.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on new or existing software products and tools.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement software and hardware architecture that supports predictive analytics and machine learning.
  • Identify, integrate and cleanse data source information for processing.
  • Document and communicate opportunities for improvement identified in the data, such as scalability or quality concerns.
  • Write and refine code to ensure performance and reliability of data extraction and programming.
  • Implement data structures using best practices for data modeling and visualizations.
  • Produce comprehensive and usable dataset documentation and metadata.
  • Train, mentor, recommend alternative solutions to problem solving and provide review feedback to direct team members on project objectives, quality, etc.
  • Own the overall technical design and direction of the developed product.
  • Build user interface and visualization for advance analytics models.
  • Oversee or develop, design, document and test advanced data systems that supports building of AI/ML models.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
  • Seven (7) years of data engineering, application programming and analysis experience is required.
  • Minimum three (3) years of working experience is required in big data tools, public cloud, and end-to-end life cycle of analytical pipeline creation.
  • Previous experience working in the healthcare and/or consulting industry is preferred.
  • Experience in API and User Interface development.
  • Broad level of understanding surrounding information systems and application architecture standards is required.
  • Experience designing, developing, and testing applications using proven or emerging technologies is required.
  • Project management and experience leading projects is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of big data platforms (i.e., Map/Reduce, YARN, HDFS, etc.), query building (i.e. PL/SQL, HIVE, Impala, Spark, etc.), programming (i.e. R, Python, C, Java, Ruby, etc.), visualization tools (i.e. QlikView, Tableau, Web FOCUS, etc.), Databricks, and streaming platform (i.e. Kafka).
  • Basic statistics modeling skills (i.e., linear regression, logistic regression, decision trees, random forests, etc.)
  • Basic statistical testing techniques (i.e., ANOVA t-tests, chi-squared, etc.)
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Access, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively interface and present to management at all levels of the organization. 
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
