We Strive to Drive Power Innovation Through Data

As power systems all over the world incorporate more inverter-based generation and other power electronic assets, unprecedented dynamic instabilities have emerged. These behaviors remain poorly understood, and therefore operators and utilities are still learning what to analyze, how to analyze it, and how to effectively address their root causes. Limited availability of transparent and validated models makes it difficult to foresee these emerging dynamics, making measurement-based analysis essential. We on the Engineering Analytics & Modeling team see this challenge and aim to rise to the occasion. Our team mandate is simple: we aim to bridge the gap between real-world system data and generate innovative capabilities and provide consumable business intelligence to help steer the future of how we monitor and manage the grid. Our fast-growing team is responsible for utilizing time-series data, including Synchrophasors and SCADA. We seek the curious, the self-motivated, and those driven by the pursuit of driving change.

Job Summary: We Seek Joint Expertise Power Systems Dynamics and Time Series Analysis

Our team comprises a critical part of the Strategic Initiatives team on the Electric Transmission organization. We focus on addressing a broad spectrum of transformational and innovative projects with a focus on solving problems through real grid measurements, data analytics, and custom developed modeling and software capabilities built on the backbone of our time series data. A successful candidate will be able to:

  • Steer the development of an array of analytical tools and capabilities aimed at observing, diagnosing, and surfacing system behavior that can help improve grid management.
  • Explore new research areas for time-series analysis in power systems.
  • Use of dynamic control models for analysis and mitigation of observed grid phenomena.
  • Prototype techniques to expeditiously solve operational and planning problems.
  • Closely collaborate with third-party vendors and consultants as well as participation in the broader industrial research communities through proactive pursuit of publications and public presentations.
  • Interface with internal customers or customer groups within Dominion Energy and delivering executive level presentations to Dominion leadership on the value delivered by the team and its relevance to our core objectives.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences required for entry into this job include the following:

This position will be filled at the level commensurate with the selected candidates’ skills and abilities.

  • Senior Engineer: 5+ years of engineering experience
  • Staff Engineer: 8+ years of engineering experience

(An Engineering PhD can be substituted for up to 5 years’ experience based on research engineering work on related projects approved by executive leadership.)

  • Power System Engineering: steady-state and dynamic stability analysis (e.g. PV curve, transient and small signal stability). The candidate should be able to extend this theoretical knowledge to large-scale, practical problems to identify implementable solutions.
  • Data Science & Data Analysis: The candidate should possess strong software development skills and frequently use code to solve analytical and automation problems. More specifically, the candidate must demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in developing tools and performing analysis using Python and the common Python scientific computing libraries.
  • Data Driven Power System Analysis: This includes applications including state estimation, mode estimation, model validation and calibration, use of spectral analysis, etc.
  • Autonomy and self-starting: We are spea
