About the role

The Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist – Psychiatrist vacancies for Statewide Mental Health Services (SMHS), Adult Mental Health Services.

The role:

As part of a multidisciplinary mental health service delivering high quality mental health care and, in accordance with Mental Health Service principles, National Mental Health Standards, the Psychiatrist:

  • Provides comprehensive general inpatient and community psychiatric services in Tasmania.
  • Acts as a consultant to mental health professionals and health service providers, including general practitioners and other agencies, regarding the assessment and management of individuals with mental health disorders.
  • Undertakes supervisory responsibilities with Registrars/Career Medical Officers, Resident Medical Officers and other medical staff as required/appropriate.

Mental Health Services:

State-wide Mental Health Services (SMHS) is a leader and innovator for a unique corner of the health care industry. We provide a comprehensive suite of mental health services in adult, alcohol and drug, forensic, older persons, child and youth and correctional primary.

The SMHS Adult Mental Health Service South reforms have provided opportunities in services such as The Acute Care Team, Police, Ambulance and Clinical Early Response (PACER) and Hospital in the Home Teams. In partnership with the University of Tasmania, the Service has also established the Tasmanian Centre for Mental Health Service Innovation which is dedicated to helping enhance and improve mental health service offerings for children, young people, and adults across Tasmania. The Centre is being co-directed by Professor David Castle and Professor Brett McDermott and its activities will focus on workforce development, training and education, research and development, and policy and advocacy.

All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

Available roles for Staff Specialist – Psychiatrists in SMHS Adult Mental Health Service South, include the provision of services in:

  • Community-based Mental Health Services, including the Acute Care Stream (ACS), the Continuing Care Stream (CCS), Mental Health Hospital in the Home (MHHiTH) and a community inpatient facility (Peacock House).
  • The acute general adult Mental Health Inpatient Unit (MHIU) at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).
  • The general adult Consultation-Liaison (CL) psychiatric service in the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) and associated facilities, including the Emergency Department (ED) and the Mental Health Short Stay Unit (MHSSU).
  • Rehabilitation and extended care facilities: Millbrook Rise Centre (MRC) a 27 beds inpatient facility at New Norfolk and Tolosa Street, which has 6 rehabilitation beds in the community.
  • Step-up and step-down facilities in the community.

Details of Appointment 

Permanent full time, day worker position (with on-call) working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

Salary

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $216,300 - $310,389 per annum + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging
