Job Summary:
The Department of English Language and Literature in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan seeks applicants for a full time Lecturer III position with an anticipated start date of August 25, 2026. This position is non-tenure track, with a University Year appointment period (i.e., runs August 25 through May 24 each year).
A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer III in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three (3) courses per semester, or the equivalent in administrative and/or service duties.
The initial appointment period will be four (4) years and the appointment may be renewed (based on programmatic need, funding, and performance). The appointment is subject to final approval by the College.
Responsibilities:
Duties and responsibilities for this Lecturer III position are expected to include both instructional and administrative duties. This Lecturer will provide excellent classroom teaching for the English Department Writing Program (EDWP) and the English department, with emphases on the range of EDWP writing courses, community engagement, and their areas of expertise within literary and cultural studies. In their administrative role, this Lecturer will serve as Undergraduate Community-Engaged Learning Coordinator for the English department. The Lecturer will: 1) serve as the English department’s liaison with the Ginsberg Center and coordinate the Center’s support for all sections of English 126 (Community-Engaged Writing); 2) provide English-specific professional development and support for GSIs, Lecturer faculty, and tenure-track faculty teaching English 126 and English 221 (Literature and Writing Outside the Classroom); 3) assist GSIs, Lecturer faculty, and tenure-track faculty with incorporating experiential learning components into various courses; 4) facilitate extracurricular opportunities for community-engaged learning among undergraduates; and 5) provide academic-year support for the department’s soon-to-be-established undergraduate literary journal
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
· Prior to the start date of the position, a Ph.D. in English or a related field prior to the start date of position;
· evidence of effective teaching of a range of writing courses;
· experience with offering effective professional development for instructors;
· interpersonal skills and professional training necessary for effective teaching, mentoring, and community building.
Desired Qualifications:
· evidence of effective teaching of community-engaged learning courses and literary and cultural studies courses;
· experiential knowledge related to topics such as: bringing local cultural institutions into the writing classroom; scaffolding public-facing writing assignments; working with AI in the writing classroom; backward course design; designing, developing, and implementing assessments; leveraging student interests and expertise in writing assignments; and transparent pedagogy and course design.
