Train with an Exceptional Team on the Cape

Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists (CCVS) invites motivated veterinarians to apply for our three-year Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Residency Program. Designed to prepare residents for board certification and excellence in clinical practice, this intensive program offers the mentorship, case volume, and collaborative environment needed to develop into a confident and capable criticalist.

CCVS is a thriving 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital with two locations—Buzzards Bay and South Dennis, Massachusetts, proudly serving a combined annual caseload of over 19,000 cases. Residents work alongside an experienced, multi-specialty team of more than 30 veterinarians, including 25 board-certified specialists across a wide range of disciplines.

Our current team includes:
  • 4 full-time and 2 part-time Criticalists (ACVECC)
  • 4 full-time and 2 part-time Surgeons (ACVS)
  • 4 Internists (ACVIM)
  • 1 Cardiologist (ACVIM/Cardiology)
  • 1 Anesthesiologist (ACVAA)
  • 1 Dermatologist (ACVD)
  • 1 Zoological Medicine Specialist (ACZM)
Residents benefit from daily cage-side rounds, direct mentorship from criticalists and surgeons, and collaboration with six ACVS diplomates who provide advanced emergency surgical training. Our residency graduates have achieved a 100% first-time board pass rate over the last five years and are prepared for success in both specialty practice and leadership roles in private hospitals.

What the Program Offers
  • Primary case responsibility on high-acuity emergency and critical care patients, with oversight and guidance from senior criticalists.
  • Broad surgical exposure in emergency procedures under supervision of board-certified surgeons.
  • Didactic and clinical teaching opportunities for interns and technical staff.
  • Weekly rounds, M&M discussions, and journal club participation to reinforce learning and clinical reasoning.
  • Research support: An annual research fund plus mentorship for completing and publishing a first-author manuscript in accordance with ACVECC requirements.
  • Continuing education allowance: Annual CE allowance with paid membership to AVMA, VIN, VECCS, and MVMA.
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance; 401(k) with matching; and complimentary scrubs.
