SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Principal Engineer - Fire Protection will function as an engineering expert for Amtrak’s Major Stations, which include Philadelphia, New York, Washington, Chicago, Baltimore, and Newark. The incumbent shall have a thorough and demonstrated knowledge of Fire and Life Safety design requirements.
Reporting to Director Engineering the Fire Protection Engineer position serves as a technical subject matter expert (SME) pertaining to fire protection, and life safety with a focus on tunnels, overbuilds, rail platforms and Major Station structures. The position provides service to numerous internal departments such as Stations, Planning, Mechanical and Transportation along with Engineering projects/programs. Support provided through resolving issues related to fire protection and life safety utilizing both deterministic and performance-based methods, code consulting, and egress analysis, fire protection system design and reviews, fire hazard analysis, and computer-based modeling analysis.
As an SME, the Principal Engineer - Fire Protection position is responsible for reviewing/collaborating project design with internal staff as well as external architecture/engineering firms and consultants. The Fire Protection Engineer will also coordinate and partner with internal and external stakeholders, including Amtrak’s project delivery, law, real estate, transportation, mechanical, and engineering departments, as well as local and state agencies, the FRA, and freight and commuter railroads.
This position requires the ability to work independently to oversee design projects and design consultants from inception through completion, collaborate with stakeholders and project partners, build consensus, and to ensure design compliance with industry and Amtrak standards and best practices. The incumbent will preferably work out of the Philadelphia 30th Street Station office.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ensure project compliance with Amtrak standards and guidelines and all applicable federal/state/regional regulatory agency requirements. Ensure alignment with project scope and limitations.
- Review, analyze and report on all project documents, including proposals, reports, schedules, estimates, value engineering proposals, etc.
- Support construction administration activities. Review field installation, RFIs and shop drawings. Assist in punch lists and project closeout activities.
- From time to time, analyze issues, perform research, and develop white papers/reports to communicate design strategies, address project issues, issue directives to consultants, project teams, or stakeholders, etc.
- Assist in the updating of station and facility design standards via collaboration with other Amtrak stakeholders.
- Prioritize safety and security, sustainability, resiliency, and customer experience.
- Identify, document, and implement Amtrak’s requirements into projects. Mitigate disagreement through research, partnering and consensus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 7 years professional experience in fire protection engineering, including at least 3 years in the transportation industry and/or complex building.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or equivalent degree or years of experience.
- Licensed Professional Engineer or willingness to obtain within 3 years of hire.
- Competency of building code, including NFPA 130, other relevant codes and recommended practices for fire protection equipment, controls, power sources, and SCADA. Infrastructure experience in maintenance, planning, design, construction preferably in a railroad environment.
- Demonstrated experience working in a matrix organization.
