The salary range for this position is $6,093.00 - $7,548.00 monthly. 

Thurston County Public Works is recruiting for a Crew Chief to join our dynamic, energetic, and innovative Road Operations team. The successful candidate will direct the work of one or more Road Division crews by establishing work priorities, analyzing work requirements, and determining procedures and methods. A division crew may include road maintenance, vegetation management, or another functional area assigned by management. This position recommends and assists in the preparation of annual work projections, provides budget input and information, and will receive general supervision from the Road Operations Supervisors and Manager.

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:  

  • Oversees the work, and provides direction to, road operation crews for a functional area, i.e., road maintenance, vegetation management, or another area as assigned by management. 
  • Schedules road maintenance and construction work, including emergency response.
  • Maintains work records including timecards, material tickets, work completed, and accident reports. 
  • Makes recommendations regarding personnel issues, such as hiring, evaluations, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
  • May assist the Safety Manager or Training Coordinator in meeting State and Federal safety guidelines, investigation of accidents/damage claims, and in presenting safety meeting information to the various crews.
  • Investigates and recommends appropriate action for service requests/complaints from the public.

Essential Personnel: This position is considered to be an essential worker and may be required to work during non-business hours or closures in order to meet operational requirements and needs, such as clearing roads during a snow and ice event.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Environment - Work may be performed indoors in an office environment or shop, and/or outdoors. May be exposed to a variety of weather conditions with physical effort exerted. Employees may have a potential risk exposure to heavy equipment, traffic, a variety of hazardous materials, supplies, and chemicals, and various terrains. 
  • Schedule - A regular full-time workweek shall normally consist of forty (40) hours within a seven (7) day period. The schedule may consist of eight (8), nine (9), or ten (10) hours of actual time worked or compensated per a twenty-four (24) hour period. Other schedules may be established with notice.
  • Travel Requirements - Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings, trainings, and perform work in the field.
  • Customer Interactions - Daily interactions with Thurston County staff and the public.
