Summary

The Montgomery County Department of Parks—Southern Parks Division seeks an experienced, organized, and professional Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader-CDL to oversee the division’s Stormwater Management Team located in Potomac, MD.

Under general supervision, leads daily stormwater maintenance in parks, supervising staff and ensuring systems function properly through debris removal, vegetation control, and repairs. Manages schedules, equipment, and compliance with safety and environmental standards. Strong stormwater maintenance knowledge. A Class-A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required and must be obtained within 12 months of hire. The position offers training, growth opportunities, and a primarily day-shift schedule with occasional nights, weekends, and holidays.

The Southern Parks Division supports both local and regional recreation across some of the most densely populated areas of Montgomery County. This Stormwater Management Team performs non-structural maintenance on all stormwater management facilities within the Southern Region of Parks, currently maintaining approximately 335 facilities, with continued growth expected.

Examples of duties

Stormwater Management & Park Maintenance Leadership

  • Lead stormwater maintenance across park systems and facilities 
  • Supervise staff, schedule work, and ensure environmental compliance 
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair drainage systems and infrastructure
  • Support emergency response operations (e.g., storm events, flooding, debris removal).

Equipment & Vehicle Operation

  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment, tools, and CDL-required vehicles 
  • Transport crews and materials; support storm and emergency response

Administrative Tasks

  • Manage staffing, schedules, and work orders 
  • Track assets, activities, and compliance reporting 
  • Maintain records, communication, and staff training

Important Working Characteristics

  • Strong knowledge of stormwater practices and regulations 
  • Effective leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills 
  • Tech-proficient, safety-focused, and environmentally driven

Working Conditions

  • Primarily works outside. 
  • May be required to work weekends, evenings and holidays. 
  • Occasionally exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g., bees, hornets, wasps) and plants (e.g., poison ivy). 
  • Some pressure to meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds

Additional Information

Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  2. Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years.
