Position Overview

The Regional Environmental Director is responsible for overseeing the region’s environmental and sustainability activities.  This includes managing a team of environmental professionals, developing and implementing environmental and sustainability strategies aligned with the company’s goals, as well as driving continuous improvement in the environmental processes ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Conduct compliance reviews, inspections and internal audits to ensure adherence with all applicable environmental permits, rules and regulations.
  • Ensure the environmental team obtains all environmental permits required for company plants, sites and projects.
  • Ensure all compliance or monitoring tests are conducted in accordance with timeframes outlined in environmental operation permits.
  • Provide education and training to all company employees on environmental issues and responsibilities.
  • Report all federal violations of environmental permits, rules and regulations to company management personnel and, when required by operational permits, to duly authorized regulatory agencies.
  • Keep informed regarding changes to environmental legislation, trends and best practices and assess the potential impact these changes will have on company operations.
  • Lead implementation of compliance-related policies and procedures throughout the company. This includes supporting divisional environmental and sustainability initiatives. 
  • Develop and implement environmental compliance plans for programs such as air quality, storm water discharges, oil spill prevention or control, recycling, managing hazardous materials, employee education and other environmental programs.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team that drives for continuous improvement and maintains a positive working environment.
  • Carry out all assigned tasks and projects in a timely manner.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies or related field required; and five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in the construction or building materials industry preferred.

 

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.

 

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and the use of the Internet.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, motivate and lead employees.
  • Ability to cope well in stressful environments and communicate professionally.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks effectively with a focus on timeliness and responsiveness.
  • Ability to drive change and sell new concepts and approaches through persistence, self-motivation, energy, tenacity, follow-through, and commitment.
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
  • Demonstrate a hands-on, collaborative approach; work well in a team. Ability to work independently when necessary.
  • Ability to summarize data from different sources into a concise format that can be easily expanded and communicated to support initiatives.
