Description

We are looking for an Accounting Manager to join our mission-driven team. As an integral part of the Finance & Accounting department, this role will report to and work closely with the Associate Director of Finance & Accounting to support Purple Carrot’s continued effort to inspire people to eat more plants.

We are looking for someone who is strong in the fundamentals of accounting, but also energized by improving processes, creating structure, and helping a growing business scale. This role is ideal for someone who can stay hands-on in the details while also identifying where workflows, systems, documentation, and reporting need to be cleaned up or improved.

The Accounting Manager will play an important role in the month-end close process, financial reporting, inventory and COGS-related accounting, accounts receivable, and day-to-day accounting operations. This person will also help strengthen internal controls, improve QuickBooks workflows, and create clearer, more repeatable accounting processes for the team.

We greatly thank all applicants; however, only those under serious consideration will be contacted.

Location

  • This role is based in Chicago, IL (hybrid in office)
  • Our hybrid approach includes 3 in-office days each week, giving teams the best of both flexibility and collaboration. Many team members choose to come in more often - it’s a great way to stay inspired and engaged with the team.

On the Plate

  • Lead and support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities to ensure timely, accurate, and reliable financial reporting.
  • Own and improve recurring accounting workflows, including journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Support accurate accounting for inventory, COGS, and product-related costs, ensuring financial reporting reflects operational realities.
  • Partner with Operations, Supply Chain, and other cross-functional teams to understand cost drivers, resolve accounting issues, and improve reporting accuracy.
  • Oversee and improve accounts receivable processes, including customer payments, reconciliations, and related reporting.
  • Review and improve QuickBooks workflows to increase accuracy, reduce manual work, and support a cleaner month-end close.
  • Help document accounting processes, identify gaps or redundancies, and create clear SOPs.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard company assets and support GAAP compliance.
  • Work with external stakeholders, including auditors, third-party accounting partners, contractors, and our parent company.
  • Support ad hoc accounting, reporting, and process improvement projects as needed.

Main Ingredients for the Role

  • 4+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, ideally with hands-on month-end close ownership.
  • Experience in ecommerce, DTC, manufacturing, food, consumer products, or inventory-based businesses.
  • Hands-on exposure to COGS, inventory accounting, product costing, or cost accounting workflows.
  • Experience working in QuickBooks Desktop or QuickBooks Enterprise strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, reconciliations, accruals, and internal controls.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and working with large or messy data sets.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • CPA certification or active pursuit of CPA license preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to commute to our Chicago office as needed.
