Overview

Reporting to the Collections Manager, HSI, the Catalog Assistant will assist with processing large new accessioned collections. This will include helping with object cleaning and freezing, reorganization and rehousing, and photography and cataloging. The work will include ongoing long-term efforts to process a large archive of mixed materials related to the production of a historical mineralogy book and to process multiple thematic collections donated by a major longtime donor Professor Tom Lentz.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Familiarity with minerology and Lentz projects.

2. Demonstrated ability designing and carrying out projects.

3. Prior experience utilizing Peabody collections database.

4. Prior experience and training on object handling and rehousing.

5. Familiarity with Peabody working practices.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Describes new and already accessioned works. 2. Checks, corrects and updates records and provides additional data in the case of incompleteness. 3. Maintains authority control using authority files and controlled vocabularies. 4. May be required to consult related databases and authorities to update records as appropriate. 5. Performs and ensures the safe handling of works and related collections of materials. 6. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Four years of related work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or two years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
