This is a position at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin.
Purpose
The candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary research team assessing land surface status, especially related to vegetation, evapotranspiration, soil properties, recharge and soil content, using point-scale sensors, satellite remote sensing, GIS, etc. Significant data management, scripting, and synthesis are expected.
Responsibilities
Maintain eddy covariance (EC) weather field stations that measure evapotranspiration (ET) and other environmental parameters, process EC data, collaborate with scientific groups involved in ET studies.
Participate in soil recharge studies involving horizontal directional drilling, measurement of water content using various sensors and geophysical instruments, data processing and related research activities.
Use remote sensing and GIS to map geophysical data.
Collaborate with team members on related topics as directed by supervisor.
Present research in peer-reviewed articles and reports, and in oral and poster formats at local and national meetings, and to sponsors and other interested groups.
Required Qualifications
A Master's degree in hydrology, Earth science, or related field with 2 years of related work experience or a Bachelor's degree and 4 years of related work experience is required. Demonstrated experience with field hydrologic measurements and Matlab, Python or other programming skills. Must effectively work in groups and independently, sometimes in difficult field conditions. Ability to manage and assimilate complex datasets and to disseminate results of research projects to professional peers. Demonstrated ability and interest to work within an integrated team of scientists, engineers, and economists in a dynamic environment. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines. Excellent interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
More than the minimum required years of experience. Background in evapotranspiration methods from field measurements, land surface modeling, or remote sensing is preferred. Hydrogeophysical data collection methods using electromagnetics or ground penetrating radar is desirable. Willingness and ability to adapt to changing research programs and project needs. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Working knowledge in machine and/or deep learning techniques. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and deliverables. Professional demeanor and good interpersonal skills.
Salary Range
$55,000 + depending on qualifications.
