The Opportunity

OTPP seeks a highly motivated individual, with a track record of successful venture growth investment experience and a strong professional network, to join the TVG North America team in San Francisco as a Director.

Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP) is a global investor with net assets of $247.5 billion as at December 31, 2023. We invest in a broad array of assets including public and private equities, fixed income, credit, commodities, natural resources, infrastructure, real estate and venture growth to deliver retirement income for 340,000 working members and pensioners. We are a fully funded defined benefit pension plan and have earned an annual total-fund net return of 9.3% since the plan's founding in 1990. Teachers' Venture Growth (TVG) is the division of OTPP focused on investing in high-growth technology companies. TVG’s 35 investors work from offices in San Francisco, Toronto, London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Mumbai. Our mission is to support and scale innovative companies, while delivering outsized risk adjusted returns for our members. TVG focuses on investing into companies with established product market fit, and where our initial commitments may range from $50M - $250M of equity. Specific sectors of investment focus include: enterprise software, climate / energy transition, healthcare, and financial services.

What you'll do

  • Develop and articulate investment theses that align with TVG's investment mandate- businesses leveraging technology to build large scale companies with enduring advantages.

  • Lead or support in all aspects of venture growth investing from origination, screening, due diligence, structuring, negotiation, to portfolio management and exit.

  • Negotiate transaction documents and ensure successful deal closures.

  • Present investment recommendations to the relevant internal committees.

  • Establish and build effective relationships within the venture capital ecosystem, including with startups, venture funds, corporate partners and other service providers.

  • Be able to develop deep knowledge of the economic/characteristics, conditions and trends of a wide range of industries and their investment characteristics.

  • Ability to adapt to and embrace OTPP’s strengths based culture, including mentoring junior investment talent, fostering a culture of teamwork, collaboration, continuous learning and personal growth.

  • Serve as a director on TVG portfolio company boards where appropriate, providing strategic guidance and support.

  • Collaborate across OTPP asset classes to leverage synergies and drive value creation.

  • Manage internal responsibilities of portfolio management, including portfolio valuation work, various reporting requirements and internal presentations on key technological themes / trends

What you'll bring

  • 10+ years of professional venture / growth equity investment experience.

  • Demonstrated experience leading all aspects of venture growth investing from origination, screening, due diligence, structuring, negotiation, to portfolio management and exit.

  • Extensive professional network and relationships across the North American technology venture ecosystem.

  • Proven track record of sound investment judgment and portfolio company support delivering successful outcomes.

  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills and ability to perform in-depth analysis.

  • Strong negotiation skills including leading transaction document negotiations.

  • Curious, entrepreneurial, self-motivated, results and growth oriented.

  • Experience as an operator in a high growth technology company is a plus.

  • Embraces developing junior talent and managing investment teams

  • History of board director service, providing valuable strategic guidance and insights.

  • Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work across different asset classes within OTPP.

  • Ability to travel, as required
