About the role

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times is looking for a talented, experienced and versatile reporter to join the National desk as it builds a jump squad of journalists whose mission is to own the county’s biggest, most captivating stories every day, supercharging the desk’s ability to dominate the national conversation.

As part of this team, you will be focused on searching out and responding to breaking news events, wherever they may occur in the country. You should have quick twitch muscles, able to plug in with our regional correspondents and bureau chiefs in seconds and work symbiotically to win readers and beat competitors in the highest leverage moments.

You're able to hit the ground running, cultivating news sources and contacts on the story to land scoops and drive coverage. You should be able to write quickly and precisely, as well as commit to writing in a variety of formats while juggling deadline demands.

You must be as comfortable covering immediate breaking news as you are writing thoughtfully and deeply about events and issues. And above all, you must be collaborative and eager to work with, and learn from, Times colleagues across various desks in the newsroom.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City but may require extensive travel within the United States. This role is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

Responsibilities:

  • You will deliver stories that help readers better understand the news event, from scoops to explanatory reporting to quick turnaround investigations.

  • You will have your finger on the pulse of the country, monitoring news and delivering a steady stream of story ideas.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to a National Editor.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization

  • Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgments

  • A portfolio that includes breaking news, enterprise, visual story formats and analysis across a range of subjects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience promoting a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
