JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are seeking a Research and Development Engineer to join our Manufacturing Science Division team of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. You will work on program development for special projects and material engineering projects by contributing to research, design, develop, build, organize, characterize, and execute metals research (including casting, forging, and additive manufacturing) of various DoD and industrial applications.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Material design, build, simulation, and experimental characterization of metals
  • Experimental analysis, design, and testing of payloads
  • Contribute to laboratory and field experiments of applied material solutions
  • Contribute to experimental characterization across laboratory spaces and equipment owners
  • Learn and apply standard operating procedures for equipment and characterization methods

This position can be filled as a Level 1 or Level 2, depending on your education and experience.  Minimally requires a Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline.  Additional experience and/or education are required for higher-level positions. A Master’s Degree is preferred.

Additional responsibilities of a level 2 include:

  • Mentor undergraduate research students on both chemical and machine/lab-specific safety
  • Initiate or contribute to/develop and present technical and project status reports
  • Interact in a collaborative manner with other team members, engineers, and scientists

Requirements skills and experience include:

  • Metallographic analysis
  • Mechanical testing
  • Design using CAD tools and other digital engineering principles
  • Data collection and data processing from characterization techniques
  • Solidification modeling
  • Design of experiments and ANOVA
  • Design for Casting and Additive Manufacturing for engineering solutions
  • Technical writing
  • MATLAB, Excel, PowerPoint, Thermo-Calc

Your working location will be on-site, located in State College, PA. This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.
