About the role

JOB SUMMARY

Lead the engineering required for all tooling and equipment needs for the TTX FMO/Shop network.   Design or source new tools and equipment for use in the FMO network or shops (such as jack stands, etc.) as required.  Leads small and large projects as required.    Has knowledge of the organization, processes and customers.  Has in-depth knowledge and experience of the TTX maintenance facilities to understand the unique requirements of each location.  Consider the uniqueness of each location to aid in the development of standardized equipment.  Demonstrated high level experience of one or more of the following: rail car components, maintenance and modification of rail cars. Has knowledge of multiple specialty components and other related disciplines with in Engineering and Research.  Act as a mentor for colleagues with less experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Discover and investigate the need for new and revised Maintenance Instructions and Job Plans.  Assist TTX divisional shops and Field Maintenance locations with implementation. Investigate major modifications of existing equipment for a defined service, create specifications, and participates in the implementation of the modification program while working independently with no day to day guidance.  (25% of Time)
  • Leads small and large projects, and participates in cross-functional teams supporting the tactical and strategic goals of the Equipment Department. Has accountability for setting and meeting milestones. Keeps project plans up to date as the program and project progress. Use Engineering principles and/or software to design and analyze various structures or components used in TTX fleet and operations.  (25% of Time)
  • Evaluate, revise, develop, create, issue, and maintain tool & equipment policies, specifications, and drawings to ensure all technical content (analysis, material specs, drawings, etc.) is correct and applicable to how the tool and equipment is used in field applications while working independently with minimal guidance. Design, source, test, propose, and perform analysis (FEA or Hand-calculations) on new tools, and train the appropriate people at TTX on them (15% of Time) 
  • Discover and investigate the enhancement potential of equipment components, determine value, direct field tests, investigate reported equipment and component field failures, communicate results, recommend course of action, produce engineered solutions, and direct the solution implementation.  (15% of Time)
  • Research viability and desire of TTX to purchase, inventory, and utilize component specialties and formally approve component specialties using accepted TTX internal procedures. Implement improved vendor communications to facilitate the coordination of design, production, and maintenance of vendor components of rail equipment.  (10% of Time)
  • Discover and investigate currently unused technology to be used to enhance the performance of new and existing equipment. (5% of Time)
  • Responsible for budget, forecast, authorization for expenditures (AFE), management of consultants and reviewing contracts. Responsible for maintaining and organization all of the technical documentation.  (5% of Time)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) from a 4-year university
    • 9+ years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of Mechanical Engineering education and experience.
    • Proficient with computer software such as Windows, MS Word, MS Excel and PowerPoint
    • Proficient in AutoCAD and 3-D modeling software (Solidworks is preferred)
    • Experienced with Engineering Tools (FEA, MATLAB, etc.) to investigate and provide engineering solutions.
    • Knowledge of welding, fabrication, machining, metalworking, and manufacturing processes
    • Proficient in multitasking and working on multiple projects and tasks on a regular basis while effectively communicating status and meeting deliverables.
    • Proficient in writing formal engineering reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to apply mathematical analysis to problem solving.
    • Proficient in effectively presenting information and responding to questions from groups of managers, directors, AVP, VP, President, clients, customers, and the general public.
    • Proficient in defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, drawing valid conclusions, and providing recommended course of action.
