The Practice: 
Sovereign / International Public Finance: The Sov/IPF team covers more than 140 ratings across Western and Southern Europe and Western Africa and performs additional analysis on unrated entities (typically, credit estimates) on sovereign, regional and local governments and related entities in the area. Three Lead Analysts oversee the analytical work of pods and work hand-in-hand with the regional and global International Sovereign and Public Finance Sector Leads on ensuring analytical consistency across the ratings portfolio.

As a Grade 11 professional, you will be expected to play a significant role in initiatives that improve efficiencies within our practice area and provide professional expertise to enhance our organization's knowledge base. Ability to undertake rigorous analytical work as well as effectiveness and a proactive approach at doing research and writing well-structured analytical reports will be key attributes we would look for. 

The role’s focus is to work closely with the International Public Finance Ratings Sector Leads on analysis and research for the practice, focused on the local and regional government sector and government related entities in Italy, but also in France or Spain.

What you stand to gain:  

  • You will be offered the opportunity to take responsibility for a portfolio of ratings of local and regional governments, government related entities and other asset classes in Italy, and also in other European countries. This includes conducting site visits, ensuring timely rating surveillance and assigning new ratings by presenting rating recommendation to credit rating committees. 

  • The role includes contribution to the group’s outreach, research, and cross-portfolio publishing efforts. This includes interaction with the media, investors, and cooperation with other groups within S&P Global Ratings at the highest level of customer service standards, whilst adhering to established ratings criteria, methodology, policies and procedures.

  • You will work with junior and senior analysts within S&P Global and senior management of issuing entities through the ratings process (including ratings committees and management meetings). 

  • You will be trained by the International Public Finance team members to familiarize yourself with our analytics, rating criteria, processes, systems and databases, and corporate policies. You will be expected to build relationships with peers outside of your immediate team and function, incorporating diverse perspectives into your analytical approach.

  • You will demonstrate judgment in how you define and structure work for yourself and support team initiatives, while connecting your day-to-day operational activities to our broader strategic vision.

What we’re looking for:  

Basic Required Qualifications

  • You must have the right to work in the country of proposed employment (Italy). 

  • An advanced academic degree in economics or related fields such as business administration, finance or political science will be a plus.

  • An S&P Global employee at this level would typically comes with minimum 4 years of relevant work experience in economic or public finance analysis, or a related field of analysis. Strong skills in comparative economic and financial analysis, interest in public policy, and in financial markets in general.

  • Strong analytical mindset with proven ability to carry out economic and financial analysis in a cross-disciplinary context, and solid knowledge of public sector accounting principles. An ability to drive cross-practice cooperation and projects in a diverse and international environment; strong team player - the ability to work in a dynamic, collaborative and multicultural work environment is critical. At this level, you should be able to make decisions where clear parameters exist and can be called upon by senior staff to advise on complex issues using your analytical perspective.

  • An ability to influence and advise junior colleagues in operational processes while building consensus across groups with competing priorities.

  • Excellent Italian (preferably native) and English oral and written communication skills. Additional languages spoken in the team’s coverage area (French, Spanish) would be an important asset. You should be able to integrate and communicate complex public finance information clearly to various stakeholders.
