The Department

The Dance, Music, and Theatre department offers the following concentrations and degree options:

The department offers a Dance Major and Minor.  See the Dance Program website information:  https://dance.humboldt.edu/

The department offers a BA degree with Concentrations in Music Studies, Applied Music (Performance/Composition), and Music Teacher Preparation.  We teach piano, voice, guitar, and all orchestral instruments.  Ensembles include Choirs, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra, Humboldt Symphony, Percussion Ensembles, Jazz Combos, and Chamber Ensembles.  See the Music Program website for more information:  https://music.humboldt.edu/

Courses/Areas of Specialization

Dance courses offered by the department include Modern, Ballet, Jazz, African Dance, Tap Dance, Dance Science, Choreography, Mexican Folklórico, Middle Eastern Dance and more. 

Music courses offered by the department include Listening to the Movies, Music Appreciation, Ensembles, studio lessons, Music Theory, Ear Training, Music in World Culture, Music History, and others. 

Theatre courses offered by the department include Storytelling, Design and Production, Performance, History and Theory, and more.

Qualifications

Dance

Degree: B.A. in appropriate field is required. An earned M.F.A. in an appropriate field will be given preference. 

Experience: Successful teaching experience at the college level and/or professional work experience related to the appropriate field is required. Preference will be given to those who can provide evidence of teaching effectiveness via evaluation of supervisors or colleagues, the ability to work within the program and stated goals of the Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre.

Music

Degree: For most Music courses, a Bachelor's degree with advanced-level study relevant to the courses being taught is required. For the courses listed below, the minimum qualification is a Master’s degree, with advanced-level student relevant to the courses being taught. For the courses listed below, preference will be given to applicants with a Doctorate in Music Theory, Composition, Musicology, Music Education, or related field.

Theatre

Degree: M.A. in appropriate field is generally required, however B.A. plus teaching experience will be considered for select courses. Please check with the department regarding availability of those courses. Preference will be given to candidates holding a M.F.A. or Ph.D. in the appropriate field.
