About the role

The Principal Mine Engineer provides technical leadership for the mine engineering team. This Principal Mine Engineer is accountable for both short-range and mid-range mine planning, to ensure mine operation is consistent with safe practices, government regulations and production and financial objectives. This includes overseeing planning and scheduling, mine design and surveying. The Principal Mine Engineer is responsible for the initiation and execution of studies in mine design to address problems, improve safety, increase production and efficiency, while reducing costs Rotational Schedule will be 2 weeks on-site with 2 weeks off-site Reporting to the Manager – Integrated Operations & Improvement

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Protect the safety and health of employees by promoting safe working procedures and health programs in accordance with Company policy and appropriate regulations and ensure that all engineering services provided comply with environmental regulations and program
  • Leadership for the Mine Technical team to provide effective engineering services and ensure maximum utilization of skills by selecting, developing and evaluating technical staff
  • Ensure mining plans represent the most cost effective method of ore removal, consistent with safe and environmentally sound practices, mining regulations and according to plan by employing effective planning, scheduling and controlling work
  • Ensure that the development of mine and operating plans are consistent with regulatory requirements and sound engineering practices; also ensures that the mine and operating plans provide for the development of the Red Dog Mine to meet short and long term operating objectives
  • Responsible for the development of detailed economic analyses to determine the optimal equipment replacement strategy for the Mine and initiates and performs long-term studies to maximize the economic recovery of the resource consistent with the long-term production requirements of the mine
  • Accountable for ensuring that major mine construction projects are technically sound, economically viable and completed on schedule and within budget constraints by providing overall direction as the project manager and liaising with contractors
  • Provide mine engineering expertise for the operation and conduct studies related to new or future developments or opportunities relevant to the Red Dog deposit
  • Contribute to cost control by participating in annual budget preparation, monitoring and analyzing costs and explaining variances
  • Ensure the long-range operating objectives of the Red Dog Mine are met by providing input into capital budget expenditures
  • Communicate effectively with operating, geology, technical and environmental groups and liaise with outside agencies to meet the operation’s overall objectives
  • Ensure that daily and weekly mine production targets are met
  • Provide relief for the Operating Superintendent in the absence of the Operating Superintendent – Mining & Port
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Mining, Civil or Geotechnical)
  • Professional Engineer designation is preferred
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of senior level experience, with prior exposure coordinating and supervising an engineering team
  • Strong technical background including experience with mine projects, drill and blast, reclamation and geology is required
  • Experience with the budgeting process
  • Previous work in mine planning and development in an open pit operation is advantageous
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly spreadsheet, word processing and presentation applications
  • Advanced analytical, problem solving and decision making abilities
  • Proven and exemplary leadership skills
  • Superior interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
