DIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SERVICES & GLOBAL AFFAIRS 

BARGAINING UNIT VSCUP, GRADE: 14, FLSA: EXEMPT

BASIC FUNCTION
Provide forward thinking leadership in the strategic growth and development of a comprehensive international and global affairs student support system for the benefit of both international and domestic students. Fulfill all responsibilities and duties as the Principal Designated School Official for Vermont State University. Plan, coordinate, and
deliver programs and events that aim to foster international and multicultural student belonging, development, retention, and graduation or completion. Oversee study away programs and support and centralize faculty-led study abroad experiences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as VTSU’s Principal Designated School Official with broad oversight of I-17 management, updates, and international student services.
  • Process requests and update student records for the Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) in SEVIS to ensure institutional and student non-immigration compliance.
  • Work collaboratively across departments and within Student Success to achieve Vermont State University student success goals, the university’s mission and vision,
    accessibility requirements, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Train key stakeholders across divisions and campuses as Designated School Officials (DSO) to issue I-20s, travel signatures, and other immigration documents and
    authorizations for F-1 and J-1 international students and alumni engaged in post-completion employment in the U.S.
  • Closely collaborate with admissions regarding the enrollment process for international students. Provide recommendations for admission criteria for both fully
    admitted students as well as students eligible for the Pathway Program as part of the VTSU I-17 authorized programs.
  • Serve as institutional and state leader in fulfilling F-1 and J-1 visa regulations/SEVP compliance and VTSU institutional policies.
  • Engage with both national and regional professional international educator communities and regularly utilize resources such as the NAFSA Adviser’s Manual,
    knowledge communities, and Region XI network to stay abreast of changes.
  • Lead the content, development, and continued improvement of pre-arrival communications for incoming international students in collaboration with admissions and student success staff.
  • Oversee and integrate the International Student Orientation program with other university orientation activities, including hiring, training, and supervising student
    interns and leaders, with the support of admissions and student success staff.
  • Oversee study abroad and study away opportunities for VTSU students. Coordinate with faculty to centralize faculty-led study abroad experiences.
  • Serve as coordinator for National Student Exchange Program (NSE) and International Exchange Program (ISEP).
  • Demonstrate inclusivity and provide excellent customer service across all modalities, including in-person, telephone, e-mail, video call, live chat, texting, and the like.
  • Coordinate the development, implementation, and assessment of interventions and programming designed to reduce achievement gaps in student populations as determined by data analysis.
  • Provide ongoing technical and cultural competency training regarding international student support needs, study away opportunities, and advising needs to staff and faculty across divisions, departments, and content areas.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Direct supervision received from AVP of Advising & Career Development

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Direct supervision of one to two staff members, along with direct and indirect supervision of student employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in appropriate discipline. Two to four years relevant experience, or experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in appropriate discipline with two to four years relevant experience, or experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University.
  • Understanding of F-1 and J-1 non-immigrant student visa types and demonstrated command of immigration regulations for F-1 and/or J-1 student visa holders.
  • Experience using SEVIS as a DSO and/or ARO.
