WSP is currently initiating a search for Full-Time Assistant VP - Geotechnical Engineer for our Salt Lake City office. The following locations will also be considered: Seattle, WA. Be involved in projects with our West Power and Energy Team and be a part of a rapidly expanding group that provides trusted advisor and engineer of record services to clients in the energy sector.
This Opportunity
We have an immediate opportunity for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer, supporting substation and transmission engineering for our projects. The Candidate will work within a multi-discipline team and coordinate his/her design activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion. The engineer may lead geotechnical tasks and projects overseeing the work of multiple engineers and other technical staff. The engineer will also assist the Estimating Team in preparation of estimates and project proposals. This position directly advances local and regional responses to Climate Change by supporting the owners and operators of clean hydro power and other renewable resources. This a fantastic chance to work with a dynamic team, with access to a modern office, tools, and software, while also traveling to job sites in our beautiful mountains and lush river valleys. You will be joining the premier engineering firm leading innovation and growth in hydropower and pumped storage, solar and batteries, and wind generation in a local office that supports the build-out of the bulk electric system in support of this clean power in the West.
Your Impact
- This position is accountable to provide the design activities in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all WSP’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.
- Licensed civil/geotechnical engineer with experience designing for the high voltage, substations, transmission, as part of a bulk electric system.
- Create or oversee the completion of geotechnical design memos and drawings, prepare or oversee the creation of drill plan programs for Agency approval, and monitoring drilling and investigations on-site.
- Provide accurate and thorough designs that will meet industry standards and specifications and meet good engineering practice with excellent constructability.
- Prepare project specifications for material and equipment purchase and installation.
- Review of internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice and constructability.
- Resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
- Maintaining complete project documentation with respect to substation design and construction, including all completion packages, as-built requirements and return data information.
- Making and maintaining appropriate commitments to project teams and coordinating design activities with multi-disciplined project team members.
- Maintaining good working relationships with internal groups that support projects.
- Maintaining good working relationships with material suppliers, contractors, and any others that affect the quality, schedule, and cost of projects.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil/geotechnical engineering, or closely related discipline.
- 10+ years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior electrical design experience.
- Engineer license required (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, California, Nevada, or Montana).
- Valid Driver's License.
- Knowledge of applicable industry standards related to geology and civil engineering. Ability to perform independently and in a team environment and maintain project ownership.
- Proficiency in Bentley Suite, AutoCAD and/or Civil3D, GIS, Ensoft, Geo-Studio, Plaxis, Flac, and Rocscience.
- Proficiency in desktop editing and image editing software to develop geotechnical reports.
- Strong self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact with clients, regulators, project managers, and employees effectively, persuasively, and tactfully at all levels of the organization.
- Works independently to provide guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC (using Bluebeam Revue and other software).
- Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
