Job Overview

The Associate Director of Development for the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University (ADOD, SFS) serves as a critical member of the SFS frontline fundraising team. The School of Foreign Service is recognized and respected as one of the foremost higher education institutions for international affairs and the ADOD will be joining Georgetown at a crucial time during its most ambitious capital campaign Called to Be with a goal of raising $3 billion by 2026.

This Associate Director of Development is embedded within the Office of Advancement and will be responsible for raising philanthropic support from alumni, friends, corporations, foundations. The ADOD will support and partner closely with the SFS Dean, Joel Hellman; key SFS faculty and academic leaders; and SFS Centers, Institutes and Programs to secure the Schools fundraising goal of $300M. The ADOD portfolio and strategy work will preferably be focused on the West Coast, the Midwest, the Northeast Corridor, and the DMV. The ADOD will need to be a strong relationship builder, with a keen eye to long term strategy and philanthropic partnership, independently managing a portfolio of approximately 100-120 high-end annual and major gift relationships for the SFS capable of making gifts largely in the five, six and, at times, seven-figure range.

The ADOD is responsible for meeting key metrics throughout the year to measure performance including an agreed upon number of current and prospective donor visits, proposals/asks made and dollars raised. The role will be asked to raise $500,000-$1M annually.

An important piece of the position, aside from building out a robust portfolio is also managing the fundraising priorities of the Centers, Institutes and Programs (CIPS) within the SFS.  The CIPS can provide built-in constituencies with whom to create a pipeline for support and this will require close work with CIP directors and a strategic plan for determining how to prioritize the various CIPS to maximize ROI.  This should be in coordination with the SFS Dean to ensure his priorities are being supported and close partnership with the larger SFS and University Development teams.

Travel is involved with this role to meet with prospective and current donors and requires commitment to nights and occasional weekends. The ADOD will occasionally need to staff a principal or faculty member and might need to provide strategic direction to deployment and principal coordination. Event design and execution, volunteer management and a keen eye to communication will all be critical to success in the role, as will collaboration and teamwork across the many internal teams within Advancement, and across the larger university community.

Work Interactions

This position reports to the Senior Director, School of Foreign Service. The ADOD, SFS will partner with Office of Advancement (OA) colleagues, with a heavy emphasis on collaboration with other development officers, including the regional-based Development teams to help with idea generation, planning, and execution of creative cultivation and engagement initiatives associated with the campaign and major gifts enterprise. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement an effective strategy for attaining specific fundraising goals in the SFS.  This includes meeting stated dollar goals, visits, asks, and proposal submissions annually.
