Job Summary:

To provide courteous, caring, professional assistance to patients and family members and facilitate patient flow. To provide patients and/or family members with information pertaining to available financial options, collect payments, maintain cash drawer and balance daily cash transactions.

Education & Experience

High School Diploma/GED and two (2) years of related experience (or equivalent combination of experience and education).

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  NA

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of medical insurance claims procedures and documentation. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Skill in preparing and maintaining patient records. Interpersonal and customer service skills. Verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assembles patient information and logs into filing system. Furnishes patients, insurance companies, and referring physicians with patient information in accordance with established policies.
  • Discusses available financial options with patients and/or family members, explains billing and collection policies, and refers patients for financial assistance.
  • Performs account reconciliation and follow-up with patients and outside vendors regarding delinquent payments.
  • Coordinates appointment information between patient and medical staff to include missed appointments, call backs and scheduling patients for return visits.
  • Facilitates patient and information flow by greeting patients, answering questions and addressing concerns, providing directions to other UMMC areas, answering incoming calls, and providing administrative support.
  • Maintains cash drawer, prepares daily cash reports; balances daily cash received to patient encounter forms.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional reaching, constant sitting, occasional standing, occasional twisting, and occasional walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
