Job Description
Senior Manager, Financial Accounting
The Senior Manager of Financial Accounting is a key member of Brigham Young University’s (BYU) Financial Services Team. Your expertise in accounting processes will directly support BYU’s mission to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life.
As the Senior Manager, you will lead the processing, consolidation, and reporting of university-level financial accounting activities and provide support to the owners of the other campus financial systems. This pivotal role leads the University’s Financial Accounting team and is responsible for consulting with campus units on proper accounting, fixed asset accounting, general ledger integrity, and comprehensive financial reporting. The position also supports the University’s annual financial reporting and audit processes.
What you’ll do in this position:
Financial Accounting Oversight
- Provide guidance to support compliance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and University accounting policies
- Assist with the coordination and management of the University’s annual financial report and external audit activities
- Advise Financial Services’ division leadership and financial business partners and managers on accounting processes, policy, and financial reporting
- Enhance internal control systems and recommend financial policy improvements
- Collaborate with the Enterprise Solutions Group on ERP enhancements and functionality improvements
Team & Department Leadership
- Hire, train, and evaluate accounting team members
- Plan and manage departmental responsibilities and continuity planning
- Support finance training and professional development initiatives for both department and campus finance teams
Financial Systems Support
- Oversee the general ledger system to support reliable financial reporting across campus
- Resolve campus help cases and clarify financial system usage
- Evaluate and improve financial system efficiency and compliance
- Support the creation of new financial reports and queries to meet University needs
University Citizenship
- Promote the positive image of Financial Services and the University
- Support cross-departmental initiatives and uphold institutional standards and policies
- Engage in departmental and University-wide collaboration and service
What qualifies you for this role:
Required
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
- A minimum of eight years of progressive professional experience in accounting or finance.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or related field.
- Deep knowledge of GAAP.
- Skilled in financial reporting and analysis for multiple management levels.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and lead teams effectively.
- A thorough understanding of and experience implementing effective internal controls.
Preferred
- Three or more years in public accounting practice
- Master’s degree in accounting or business administration
- CPA, CMA or similar professional designation
- Experience in higher education and nonprofit accounting
- Strong presentation skills and experience training large groups
- Significant experience in a large ERP work environment, including familiarity with Workday, and data visualization applications
- Experience in software implementation, system upgrades, and report development
