JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Do you love working outside and have a passion for agriculture? Do you enjoy learning about plants and are looking for a career building experience? Then this internship is for you!
The Grain Crops Lab in the Department of Plant Science at Penn State is seeking a research assistant. Ideally, the candidate would start on March 1, 2024, working 20 hours per week. Hours would then transition to 40 hours per week, beginning at the start of summer break (May 6), for a short-term period. However, accommodations on these start dates are possible.
The candidate will assist in conducting field and laboratory research on agronomic crops such as corn, soybean, and wheat. Typical duties include assisting lab members with establishing field plots, planting and harvest, and collecting and processing plant and soil samples in the field and laboratory settings. The successful candidate must be willing to travel/drive University vehicles to field research sites (including commercial farms), be able to work outdoors during the day, be detail oriented, and work well independently. Candidates must be prepared for the occasional long day (early morning-late afternoon) when research operations can’t be completed during normal working hours.
Additionally, this job requires operating a motor vehicle as a part of the job duties. A valid US driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
The successful candidate will report to the Lab Manager (Ethan Whitmoyer) and will frequently interact with the Principal Investigator (Daniela Carrijo), graduate students, and members from other research groups.
