The Illinois Department of Revenue, Board of Appeals, is seeking to hire licensed attorneys to act as Board Hearing Officers. These individuals will be responsible for reviewing Petitions filed with the Board of Appeals, any documentation submitted and the Taxpayer’s account. The Hearing Officer may conduct hearings if requested by the taxpayer or the taxpayer’s attorney. The hearings may be conducted in person or by phone. The Hearing Officer is then responsible for making a recommendation for relief and drafting an Order in accordance with their recommended relief. The ideal candidate will have some State or federal tax experience; the ability to work independently; and have superior writing skills.

Essential Functions
- Under administrative direction of the Chairman of the Board of Appeals, performs specialized legal services work at an advanced level in the specialized area of tax law.
- Serves as a Tax Law Advisor for the Board of Appeals.
- Prepares comprehensive hearing and conference recommendations which include issues involved, findings, statements of fact, recommendations to accept, modify or reject offers in compromise, and justifications for settlements and negotiated settlement agreements.
- Schedules, coordinates, and conducts hearings and conferences with taxpayers and/or their representatives on issues including, but not limited to, abatement of penalty, non-conforming payment plans, offers in compromise, dismissed cases and other forms of equitable relief that the Board may provide.

- Works with various IDOR personnel in the continual updating and managing of both IDOR’s and the Board’s procedures and network systems.
