About the role

The Clinical Risk Manager/Patient Safety Officer RN acts as a consultant to physicians, leadership, and staff on matters of clinical risk management. Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited nursing program required. Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited nursing program preferred. Certifications & Licensures:

Certification in Quality (CPHQ), Patient Safety (CPPS), or Healthcare Clinical Risk Management (CPHRM) required within 18 months of hire and remains active throughout employment
RN license in the state of Tennessee

Experience:

3 years of clinical risk management experience in an acute care hospital setting preferred
Lean and effective project management experience desired
Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office products required; experience in electronic database management and systems development preferred
Ability to maintain confidentiality and know when to share confidential information with the proper individuals within the organization is an essential skill for this position
Must possess strong problem solving, interpersonal, and presentation skills
Must be able to work both independently as well as collaboratively within all levels of the organization including physicians, employees, and management staff
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in a professional, clear, and concise manner; an understanding of how to effectively communicate both positive and negative outcomes is critical to this role
Ability to function effectively, independently, and efficiently in a stressful and dynamic work environment
Thorough understanding of quality improvement processes, tools and techniques, quality measurement and reporting, accreditation and regulatory standards, root cause analysis, process analysis, and preventative risk management strategies

Job Duties and Responsibilities:Performance of these duties include but are not limited to the following:

Coordinates the risk management program to meet the needs of the institution.
Reviews and analyze all occurrence reports for Risk Management, quality of care, regulatory and insurance concerns.
Performs investigation of potentially reportable incident (s) to the Tennessee Department of Health.
Conducts Root Cause Analysis investigations, which include assessing the need for focused review by departments, and/or clinical chairpersons for peer reviews.
Prepares various incident summary reports; provides all required documentation for investigations, activities and resolutions related to the reported incident (s).
Assists with the peer review process and completion of safety solutions.
Identifies organizational risk through trend analysis of incidents, incident letters, reports etc.
Interfaces with external insurance representatives to assist with potential claims as well as cases of concern by preparation of preliminary reports, and determination of priority of investigation given risk management assessment
Acts as a resource person by presenting relevant risk management issues for discussion and evaluation.
Keeps abreast of appropriate regulatory requirements related to risk management.
Responds to inquiries regarding various reports and individual professional liability matters.
On-call responsibility providing 24/7 coverage to field inquiries from all staff (outside normal business hours) on risk management and other concerns.
Active participation on committees directed toward promoting quality of care and with availability to attend other Committee meetings as well as Mortality and Morbidity conferences.
Assists in developing educational programs to raise staff awareness to risk exposure and the impact on professional liability.
Performs other related duties as assigned
