The Telemetry Unit cares for cardiac and neurology telemetry patients, including those with stroke and seizure, as well as transplant, critically ill and stable patients. As a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) on our team, you will offer unparalleled customer service to patients, families and visitors to enhance the Cleveland Clinic experience. Using your administrative and clerical skills, you will ensure efficient operational flow of the department, allowing your fellow caregivers to continue providing optimal patient care.  

A caregiver in this role works nights from 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Provide general secretarial and clerical duties and other duties such as placing charts in proper order, stamping documents including EMS log with date and name of patient, gathering and organization of emergency patient data, preparing charts, collecting data and completing general clerical duties. 

  • Complete physician order process and order entry. 

  • Answer call lights and follow up with appropriate caregivers. 

  • Ensure proper closing of charts (e.g. charge sheets, Health Screening Assessment, narrative notes, etc.) and that completed charts go to the Data Coordinator on discharge. 

  • Act as a receptionist and answer telephone, relay messages, place calls and interact with patients, families, visitors, staff and other departments in a professional manner. 

  • Transcribe physician's orders accurately, alert nurses to new orders, single orders, and stat medications and confirm that a Registered Nurse signs all orders. 

  • Receive and relay messages with accuracy from other departments (e.g. Lab, X-Ray, Admitting, etc.). 

  • Confirm that lab requisitions for patients are completed and sent to Lab. 

  • Answer patients call lights in a timely manner and follow up with appropriate nursing personnel with patient needs. 

  • Assess and organize workload, determine order of importance and prioritize work. 

  • Enter work orders in computer for appropriate departments regarding maintenance issues, biomed needs and IT related problems. 

  • Notify Environmental Services of rooms to be cleaned. 

  • Ensure 100% compliance with patient ADT functions and computer status. 

  • Complete a unit activity/time log for discharge, transfer and admissions. 

  • Complete Occurrence Report forms. 

  • Contact Patient Concierge or address patients/family issues with appropriate department head and act as a patient advocate to ensure proper patient comfort by alerting nursing caregivers of patients' needs (e.g., pain, anxiety, etc.). 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • High School Diploma or GED 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • One year of clerical duties 

  • Customer service experience

  • Rehab experience

  • Prior retail experience

  • Experience with Microsoft Office

  • Unit secretary/office clerk experience
