About the role

The Team:

The Manager – Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) Pharmacy Service leads a specialised, state-wide pharmacy team within the Tasmanian Department of Health. Here's how the team operates:

  • Clinical and advisory role: The team provides expert pharmaceutical guidance on VAD substances and medication use, supporting medical practitioners once Commission approval is obtained. 
  • Supply and dispensing: They safely manage the procurement, storage, and delivery of approved VAD medications to practitioners across Tasmania.
  • Research and policy development: Actively engaged in research and inter-jurisdictional collaboration to ensure the service is informed by current evidence and best practices.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Works closely with the VAD Commission, the statewide clinical service, the Navigation Service, and other pharmacy professionals—as highlighted in recent training and stakeholder webinars featuring the Manager of the VAD Pharmacy Service. 

This unified team helps ensure that VAD medications are managed safely, ethically, and in accordance with Tasmanian legislation and clinical guidelines.

The Role:

The Manager - Voluntary Assisted Dying Pharmacy Service will:

  • Oversee the provision of the full range of pharmacy services provided to support Tasmania’s Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) program, including dispensing, supply, clinical pharmacy review, and support for medication management policy and practice.
  • Supervise the Pharmacists working in the VAD Pharmacy Service (VPS).
  • Perform such reporting and communication as required by the VAD commission and represent the VPS alongside the Executive Director, Statewide Hospital Pharmacy.

You will need to:

  • Oversee the management of the VPS including delivery of the service to any location within Tasmania. 
  • Establish and monitor agreed KPIs as set out by the VAD Commission, including reporting requirements.
  • Develop strategies to allow the VPS to meet KPIs as set out by the VAD Commission.

Details of appointment:

Fixed term part time, day worker position, working 38 hours per fortnight, from 1 March 2026 until 30 October 2026.

*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.

Salary: $123,717 to $134,336 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Allied Health Professionals Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement No. 2 of 2022.

Allowances: 

  • Please note that access to salaries beyond $130,900 is subject to qualifications and/or application to the personal upgrade scheme 

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available: 

  • Professional Development Allowance of up to $1000 per annum

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria.

  • Tertiary qualification/program of study approved by the Pharmacy Board of Australia or completion of an overseas qualification eligible for skills assessment through the Australian Pharmacy Council.
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board of Australia

For pre-registration (intern) pharmacists: Eligible for provisional registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
