About the role

Position Summary
We are seeking an innovative and highly motivated Supervising Staff Electrical Engineer who will contribute significantly to the development of our advanced cell therapy manufacturing platform. This position will report to the Director of Hardware Development, R&D. This position will require a strong background in Electrical Engineering with a proven track record of designing and releasing products with your expertise highly influencing the final product.  Your primary role will be to technically lead the team and be a hands-on resource to design PCBAs, Cable assemblies, and architecture future products.  With the primary focus of the role to contribute to the day-to-day designs, you will also supervise and mentor the team of electrical engineers and contractors assigned to the projects.  You will ensure that the team has the resources to operate effectively, provide guidance in technical decision making and ensure a culture of collaboration and innovation within your team and the larger organization. Responsibilities

  • Drive CAD design of PCBs / PCBAs.  This involves developing schematics, updating library parts, performing Layout, and generating output fabrication and assembly data.
  • Use Altium to design new PCBAs and review designs from outside resources.
  • Participate in the design of power distribution architecture, panel definition, and cable design.
  • Guide the electrical team in selecting electrical architecture for power and signal distribution to components within the equipment, such as transformers, power supplies, motors and drives, integrated laboratory instruments, and distributed I/O.
  • Run and participate in design reviews and provide input to identify issues and drive design choices.
  • Be a part of the team building technology demonstrators and prototypes and helping debug and test those assemblies.
  • Lead teams from a technical management perspective and provide guidance and mentorship to an existing team of senior and junior engineers.
  • Guide the team in selecting tools and methods that allow for nimble and efficient operation.
  • Plan and coordinate projects for the electrical engineering team, working closely with project management and department leads in the company to determine resource needs and scheduling to ensure clear communication of project status, dependencies, and blockers.
  • Find and evaluate new vendors, manage relationships, and generate specifications for outsourced design such as CAD designers, panel shops, board houses and contract manufacturers.
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders including Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Product Management, Quality, and Compliance to ensure alignment on project scope and deliverables.
  • Provide input in the compliance process to ensure designs meet all applicable regulatory standards.
  • Assist with the development of verification and validation protocols with a focus on electronic sub-systems.
  • Support existing products in the field and in manufacturing.
  • Evaluate key business challenges and direct the development of new or innovative solutions.
  • Promote the growth and development of individuals on your team through 1:1s, performance reviews, and team meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or higher in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience is required.
  • 10+ years industry experience developing products for customer-shippable life science instrumentation or comparable equipment.
  • 5+ years of experience as a technical/engineering lead.
  • 2+ years of experience as an engineering manager or supervisor of individual contributors and/or contractors.
  • Experience developing electronic products using microcontrollers, microprocessors (ARM), DDR, PMICs and sensors.
  • Expertise in Electrical design:  analog, digital, control systems, high-speed circuit board design, and filters.
  • A strong understanding of electrical standards such as UL 508A, NFPA 79 and IEC 61010-1.  Practical experience implementing electrical equipment following these standards.
  • Familiar with electrical CAD software such as Altium, Zuken E3, or similar CAD packages.  Proficient in at least one.
  • Experience developing and bringing to production custom PCBA based electronic designs.
