Primary Purpose of Position

The RN will provide infusion services required during Military Treatment Facility (MTF) operations.  The RN is responsible for providing clinically competent medical care services within their scope of practice. The RN working at any Defense Health Agency (DHA) site is responsible for safe patient care and ensuring adherence to all Policies and Procedures.

Work Schedule/Duty Hours: Services may be required from 0400-2300 Monday through Friday. On Call requirements: 0700 on Saturday, Sunday, or the observance of Federal holidays and continues until 0700 of the following day for a twenty-four (24) hour period. Weeknight on-call shall commence at 1530 or 1730 until 0700 of the following day. Employee shall be required to provide on-call services on weekends for one (1) weekend day per month and on the day of observance of Federal holidays. Depending on workload and staffing ratio, on-call may also be required two (2) to three (3) weeknights per month.

Core Duties:

• Perform a full range of RN duties in accordance with assignment under the task order, including triage; patient assessment and monitoring; use of patient monitoring and treatment equipment; appropriate nursing care, procedures, and treatments; execution of physicians’ orders within the guidelines of standard nursing practice; documentation of patient care and observations; and patient education and emotional support. 

• Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the MTF. 

• Provide health promotion, counseling, and education. 

• Administer medications, wound care, and numerous other personalized interventions as defined in scope of practice within the state which the site is located. 

• Appropriate and thorough documentation in patient records. 

• Provide clinical guidance and instruction to LPNs/LVNs, nursing assistants, and ancillary personnel. 

• Accountable for making patient care assignments based on the scope of practice and skill level of assigned personnel. 

• Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and quickly react in emergency situations. 

• Make referral appointments and arrange specialty care as appropriate. 

• Perform all nursing services identified in the task order. 

• Follows standing orders as applicable. 

• Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes. 

• Attune assessment and critical thinking skills to ensure appropriate care can be delivered safely and within the scope of capabilities of the available resources and supplies. 

• Administers medications and treatments via oral, parenteral, and intravenously (as required by area of assignment). 

• Skilled at safely establishing, preparing, administering, maintaining, and monitoring intravenous lines/infusions/medication (if required for the assignment). 

• Provide specialized nursing care to patients with illnesses, combined medical problems or mental status that require adaptation of established nursing procedures. Direct nursing care in a manner that reflects the philosophy, objectives, and mission of the Oncology service;  Provide infusion services to multiple clinics throughout the hospital, such as Neurology, Gastroenterology, etc. 

• Teach and mentor experienced and fully trained nurses providing care to patients who are not responding to treatment because of their special needs. 

• Coordinate comprehensive nursing care in accordance with the Joint Commission, Ambulatory Care and other relevant standards and policies. 

• Interpret and execute doctor’s orders within the scope of nursing practice. 

• Instruct patients about the purpose for and the effects of chemotherapy, prevention, and management of side effects of chemotherapy, early recognition, and management options for complications of chemotherapy. 

• Administer and dispose of chemotherapy substances and supplies according to relevant standards and policies. Provide care and maintenance of central venous catheters to patients who are located throughout the hospital.
